WE'RE BACK, FOLKS!!!
Just getting started here, as my numbers are always going to be FBS vs FBS only, so we don't have data for every team in the country since several teams played FCS opponents, but let's crank this bad boy up and see what the numbers say through 1 week in the books:
Offense:
Yards per play: 4th (7.67 YPP)
Yards per game: 10th (529 YPG)
Points per game: 13th (41.0 PPG)
Passing yards per game: 4th (385 YPG)
Passing completion percentage: 9th (72.2%)
Passing yards per attempt: 9th (10.7 YPA)
Passer rating: 11th (183.89)
Rushing yards per game: 37th (144 YPG)
Rushing yards per attempt: 30th (4.36 YPA)
Sacks given up per game: 18th (1.0 per game)
3rd down conversion %: 18th (50%)
4th down conversion %: N/A (We haven't attempted a 4th down conversion yet)
TFLs allowed per game: 4th (2.0 per game)
Red Zone TD %: 34th (50% TD rate, 3 TDs in 6 chances)
Red Zone Scoring %: 28th (5 scores in 6 chances)
Field goal %: 72nd (2 for 3)
PAT %: 1st (5 for 5)
10+ Yard Scrimmage Plays: 10th (18)
20+ Yard Scrimmage Plays: 1st (11) NOTE: We are technically 2nd, GT has 12 such plays but they have played 2 games. Of teams with 1 game played, Miami is #1
30+ Yard Scrimmage Plays: 9th (3)
40+ Yard Scrimmage Plays: 16th (1)
Defense:
Yards per play allowed: 31st (4.83 YPP) Note that this is a very good number, just small sample for other teams. 4.83 for a season would've been 11th last year.
Points per game allowed: 28th (17.0 PPG) Same as above, 17 PPG allowed for a season would have been 9th last year.
Passing yards per game allowed: 11th (122 YPG) Would be #1 by a mile for a full season
Passing completion percentage allowed: 19th (53.8%)
Passing yards per attempt: 12th (4.7 YPA) Again, #1 by a mile for a full season
Passer rating allowed: 6th (77.08) Again, #1 by a mile for a full season
Rushing yards per game allowed: 37th (139 YPG)
Rushing yards per attempt allowed: 57th (4.96 YPA)
Sacks per game: 20th (3 sacks per game)
3rd down % allowed: 3rd (11.1% allowed)
4th down % allowed: 27th (50% allowed)
TFLs per game: 15th (8 per game) 8 a game would be a Top 5 number in the country any year
Red Zone td % allowed: 61st (100% allowed -- 1 TDs in 1 chance) Only 10 FBS teams only gave up 1 red zone opportunity
Red Zone Scoring % allowed: 37th (100% allowed -- 1 scores in 1 chance)
Punting: 19th (48.5 Yard average)
10+ Yard Scrimmage Plays allowed: 32nd (13)
20+ Yard Scrimmage Plays allowed: 5th (1) Allowed 13 plays of 10+ yards and only ONE of 20+ yards, the long run by Johnson
30+ Yard Scrimmage Plays allowed: 1st (0)
Team Stats:
Penalties: 4th (2 penalties per game)
Penalty yards: 16th (26.0 Yards per game)
Turnover margin: 9th (1 per game -- 2 takeaways, 1 giveaway)
Time of possession: 10th (34:30 per game)
Number of offensive plays: (Avg 69 plays per game)
Takeaways:
Jesus Herbert Walker Christ, that was a massacre. Miami absolutely, flat-out donkeypunched the gator in essentially every single metric. That must have been a total wet dream for Mario....not only did we win, big. Not only did we physically dominate. But we also held the ball for almost 35 minutes.
Some of the stats are staggering. We had ELEVEN plays go for 20+ yards. Just for some context, last year LSU led the country in 20+ yards plays from scrimmage per game. In doing so, they had a kid win the Heisman Trophy, and had 2 receivers go in Round 1. How many 20+ yard plays per game did they average? 8.1 a game. Miami had ELEVEN, on the road against an SEC defense, in Week 1. On the flip side, the gator had ONE!! The long run by Johnson was the only 20+ yard play they had the entire game.
On offense, Cam was a complete magician, obviously. 385 yards, 10.7 an attempt, 72% completions, all elite of elite numbers. The offense as a whole averaged 7.67 yards per play, which is an insane mark. If Mario will point to one thing as an area of improvement, it will be the rushing metrics by the backs. We were effective, and we were physical, but Martinez only averaged 4.3 a carry, Fletcher 3.3, and Lyle 3.0. That can and will improve. But the offense was a goddamned well-oiled machine throughout, and honestly if we needed to get 55, we could have got 55. We only scored 3 points in the 4th quarter. But the game was over, and we were just fine pushing them around and burning the clock. We only gave up TWO negative plays the entire day, for a total of 4 lost yards. Our true freshman back lost 1 on a carry, and Cam was sacked once for -3 yards. Fantastic effort by the line, backs, and QB. It really doesn't get much prettier than this, from a numbers perspective.
On defense, our guy Guidry had Billy Boy and Graham in a **** vice grip. 4.7 yards per passing attempt would probably be an NCAA record for a full season, only 122 total passing yards allowed, we got 3 sacks, we got 8 TFLs, we held them to 11% on 3rd down. My god. They only got into the redzone ONCE the entire **** game. I don't subscribe to the "Oh, if you take away the run from Johnson" school of thinking. Nah, they popped a play, and we got burned. They get credit for that, we get dinged. But even with that, to hold a team, in their house, who was pretty good on offense last year to 17 points, 4.8 a play, 54% completions....just silly production and honestly flat out domination.
As far as some of the other stats, I said all week, if we are even or win the turnover margin, they are going to have a really tough time. Well, we were +1, and we made them bite the curb from the opening kick. Also, only TWO penalties the whole game, both on DPIs where the DBs are playing physical. Nothing presnap, nothing mental. Just gorgeous preparedness and execution.
Mario, Dawson, Guidry, and the entire staff deserve a standing ovation. THAT is how it's supposed to look, boys and girls.
We're onto FAMU. Let's go Canes.
