Very interesting article on USC. Sounds eerily familiar.

I read that article and that quote and BAM, first thing i thought of was our situation in S.Fla
SC climb back to the top will be tough because you now have AZ. AZ state, Washington, washington St
Oregon, recruiting it hard + any player of talent is being recruited by everyone ......
in the old days SC dominated the I-5 corridor LA - San diego today to many schools not enough talent to go around
which hurts Pac 12 overall....

The four important parallels are a) both are national brands b) both once were true regular national powers c) both sit on very fertile recruiting grounds (though they are quite different) and d) neither has won anything that really mattered in more years than current recruits have been alive.

You simply cannot build or maintain the area recruiting "fence" if you can't win big.

Flipside, if you win big, you can recruit anywhere. 247 just had an article that showed the big winner in 2018 Florida recruiting was...Alabama. The same article showed that the big California winner was Oregon.

Oregon has won big?

Not in half a decade, and certainly not last year. **** USC just won the Rose Bowl 2 years ago. Oregon's claim to fame was being 8-4 last season.

Helton, as that article points out, is a really nice guy. Nice guys like him and Richt cant compete in the shady world that the SEC and their bagmen thrive in

Every region of schools avoid the West so USC can just run **** but here's the thing whrn you have a bum like Helton it'll wear off. Clowns will tell you Tee Martin was to blame but Clay Helton is the short term death nail to that program

It happens a lot more often than our fans would like to think, same issues happened at Texas when Charlie Strong was there. A lot of the best kids in Texas immediately jumped off the ship & we're going elsewhere.

Kids respect winning that's all they really care about, you either build a winning program that can compete for conference titles/playoffs or you have to pay big money upfront to get the high caliber prospects, it's really that simple.

The difference between us & USC is SC pays & we don't. We won't be able to turn around local South Fla recruiting until we either start paying, or start winning.

Interesting point that also misses my point.

I said, "You simply cannot build or maintain the area recruiting 'fence' if you can't win big." It is the job of the local program to keep the outsiders out.

Oregon hasn't won anything, but USC hasn't won enough to keep the fence up. The latter is the key. If you can't keep the fence up, other programs are coming in. They then sell whatever they think they can sell. The point is, you never want to give them that opportunity, period. Miami and USC failed to win, so the fence came down. Same with Texas. When those programs really win, then the outsiders matter less.
