This is the type I hope we hire as our defensive coordinator.

4-3 Over and Under fronts. More importantly, upfield one-gap defense. This is a guy with blitz packages for days. Disguises for days. Complex, but players get to play aggressively.

It's not a knock on any other rumored candidate. Just the type of guy I hope Richt is able to grab.

He's got style that's for sure, on the field and off. Love it.

His results have been mediocre his whole career, no?

Don't really care what fronts or coverage. Simple or complex. I just can't watch a Miami team without elite D anymore.

Fair. He's had some shaky results, I think, because he seems like an NFL type who loves complex blitz packages. Perhaps he's learned something in his time at ND and could simplify some of that for our athletes. His actual Xs and Os are so well-suited for our personnel and the types of guys we can consistently get that I think it's too good to be true. And, that's why I said "or someone like him."

You started a thread about 3-4 one gap. A lot of the same attributes needed for that are seen in 4-3 Over and 4-3 Under. I believe we've got that in spades next year and beyond.

Well I guess my whole single gap 3-4 opining is not bc I want that defense, or I like it or anything.

It's bc it works and in the case of Dave Aranda, a potential DC for us, it is elite. And therefore my aim was to defend this, b/c I'd rather have a Dave Aranda 3-4 and be ranked #1 in defense nationally, than a Jim Leavitt 4-3 and be ranked 90th.

My favorite kind of D coordinator is the one that stops offenses the best.

I think VanGorder did well at UGA and would make a great DC here

He was there 15 years ago.

It's his 3rd year as DC at ND, and he's ranked in the mid 30s in both scoring and total D.

His 2nd season they were 71st and 85th.

His first season there they were 31st and 27th.

He's really been mediocre to poor, and his defenses are complex.

It would be a deeply disappointing hire, IMO.

Why would you want this DC. The last 2 years if you look at scoring d, total d, sacks, tackles for loss and interceptions, Miami was better in 7 out of 10. He is no better than Dorito. Aim higher.

Would be a nice hire. Total savage, would whip these soft-*** Dade/Broward Twitter-generation urban-youth-****less-pretenders into shape real quick. Abrasive guy, tough as nails, hung like a **** Kenyan Rhinocerous - aint no secret why his nickname was "The Meaty Cleaver." Could do better than him, but could do a lot worse too.

Yea I don't get it at all. He's been at places like AU and ND with tremendous access to talent and hasn't even sniffed a top 25 ranking since 2001.

His Atlanta falcons defense was either average or below average too. Frankly there is nothing about him that makes me confident he would do a good job here at all.

So his personality is what matters. The mean coaches are good, the quiet ones aren't?

He's been mediocre or below average everywhere he's been except his very first year as a DC 15 years ago.
