Saw this in social media the other day. Pate speaks on it.

This year’s version of the game, set for Oct. 18 in South Bend, is the last one in the current contract between Notre Dame and USC.

USC offered a one-year extension to play at the Coliseum in 2026, while Notre Dame is interested in securing a long-term agreement, according to SI.

“The two sides see the situation very differently, with talks ongoing,” Forde said.

Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said that his school is seeking a long-term extension of the rivalry, saying they should play every year “as long as college football is played.”

The hesitation reputedly comes from USC’s end, as the school is reluctant to enter into any long-term agreement given the apparent uncertainty around the College Football Playoff and what the postseason format will look like in the years to come.

Don't care.

Though they could play us every year if they need a partner
It is a good rivalry, but now is a time for securing your future, not to be anchored in the past.

If they play it, they play it and I will watch. If not, I will watch other games that day instead.

Just speaks to how much realignment keeps ******* the sport.

I enjoyed the playoff, but it would have been phenomenal with the old conference alignments...**** I'd go back even further to before the BCS conferences started raiding the G5 conferences.

Imagine Utah as a G5 beating the **** out of Bama in a playoff game or Boise State shocking Oklahoma rather than meaningless BCS bowls.

But the almighty dollar rules and many of the great things about the sport die with it...historic rivalries will soon be just that. History.

Just another example of how the "guys in charge" are ******** up a great sport.

At the end of the day, the goal is to have more competitive games on the schedule for TV so more $$$ on TV contracts. It could have been done without the dissolution of historic conferences, removal of traditional rivalries, and reducing the most meaningful and best regular season in sports to be just as humdrum as any other sport.

It's sad to be killing these national rivalries (their biggest rival) of 65 years. Dig deeper and it's part of the B1G trying to force ND to join them. Everyone else wants in. Not ND. You've gone to 9 conference games, add interconference games with the SEC and who are ND's big game opponents left to fulfill their independent NBC contract? No B1G or SEC program will play ND as their 12th game. That's why ND asks for and gets games against the ACC's top 3 programs every year, then signs a 10 year Clemson contract. When those 3 programs move on to the evil Big 2, ND is out of options. They can no longer fulfill that contract with what's left in the ACC, Big 12 and the other conferences. They are finally forced to join and be like the rest of us in the new minor league college football league. As a long time college football fan, it all sickens me. To watch college football last season without a Pac 10, 12 was a pitiful national embarrassment. As a college football fan, I have been lucky enough to have attended games across the country over the years. Great rivalry games in great stadiums just for the love of the game. From the 100,000+ seat stadiums to the Toledo's, Kent State's, Tulane's for the love of the game. Just pathetic!

Miami should step up and take USC’s place. We play the Irish off and on as part of an ACC deal, but why not enter a long-term agreement to fill in the remaining years for as long as we can? An annual game with the Irish would be high ratings as long as Miami keeps improving and the Irish stay on track.

Peeps need to get over the quaint notion of "must have" rivalries in today's CF landscape.

It's now all about what drives what is best for your program in terms of competitiveness and dollars.

That's it.

ACC should have gone all in on ND joining as a football team years ago but in reality both ND and us might wind up on big 10.

If they end the rivalry, they end it. There’s been a lot of rivalries over the years that ended and everyone went nuts and talked about it being the death of college football and all that, and then they get over it.

We play them 5 of the next 8 years. For them, they have Miami, Wisconsin, and Bama as scheduled labor day games. For the foreseeable future they will fill in the rest of labor day with games against Miami, Clemson and FSU. Conceivably you could almost form a mini conference with those 4 teams.

Well, fill in the 3 remaining years.

8 of the next 8 years

You'd think that by now people would realize it's just a game. A game that holds no real importance, other than that placed on it by obsessed fans. Priorities.
