Didn't notice until today, but UNC opened up its season versus Florida A&M this past weekend. The topline score doesn't tell the full story. For a supposed ACC Coastal Contender, UNC massively underperformed against a team with less talent, size, and resources. Some key facts from this game:
  • The spread was -44.5 UNC. Ultimately, UNC wasn't close to covering and won 56-24.
  • Going into the 4th, UNC was only up 35-24. A less than two-possession game against FAMU.
  • FAMU ended up putting up 335 yards of offense. 279 of those yards were in the air. Granted, UNC put up almost double that amount, but it's striking that their secondary got torched by an FCS School.
  • Time of possession between UNC and FAMU was a 31/29 split. Surprised to see that FAMU was able to sustain so many drives.
  • FAMU was 5/13 on 3rd Down, but 2/2 on 4th. Overall, FAMU was able to get 20 1st downs in this game.
  • FAMU was 28/39 in the air, completing 72% of its passes and averaging 7.2 yards per pass.
  • UNC was 29/38 in the air, completed 7.7 yds per pass, and completed 77% of its passes. UNC also had 314 yards on the ground, averaged 7.9 yds per carry on 40 attempts, and held FAMU to 56 yds on 27 attempts.
Overall, this is only one game, but this isn't the opener you wanted if you were Mack Brown. UNC's secondary got torched in the air, and they can't make the excuse that the 2 & 3's got torched since this was still a game going into the 4th. UNC's offense looked really good, but their defensive performance was plainly bad even after making FAMU's offense one-dimensional.

*EDIT: per a few posters below, FAMU was down 20+ players, which included 4 starters.*

They lost Grimes early in that game. And supposedly FAMU player who was cutting them up is getting NFL looks

FAMU had something like 20 guys out due to issues with paperwork, eligibility, etc.

It was a massive underperformance. But it was week 1. So while it is a red flag for week one they get a solid App St before Georgia St. So if they get to 3-0 heading into ND, Va Tech, Miami stretch you never know. But if App state can knock them off that could throw things off for them

As a proud FAMU alum...UNC absolutely didnt take that game serious at all. Especially after the news of 25 FAMU players being ineligible. They slept walk. But im proud FAMU took the fight to them. Didnt back down.

That said, UNC looks about the same as they did last year. Not very good. We should have beat them last year. No reason why we shouldnt destroy them this year. Opening line is UM -7. Which tells you all you need to know because that seems high but Vegas is not high on UNC at all.

I thought the FAMU QB played very well for what he had to work with. He was a decent player.

This right here, game will be like last year, their freshman rbs and qb look good, they’ll put up points. They also can’t tackle or cover and look like a 6-6, 7-5 team. Hopefully our old former auburn guy brings more to the table than theirs and we finally win that one.

This is a good point, thanks for the reminder. The UNC running backs looked very good. They're young, but they look to be very talented.

I'm not sure what you can take away from that match-up but UNC's defense looked suspect from what I saw. FAMU moved the ball quite steadily. Probably not the best look.

It's really too early to tell, but based on what I saw, I'd guess UNC will be mediocre this year.

So.. 11 points is a less than 2 possession game huh? Not quite 2 TD, but more than a TD and FG.

But yeah they didn't exactly look dangerous.
