ATHENS — Georgia’s release about assistants returning on next year’s staff did not mention Thomas Brown, and there’s a good reason for that.

Brown, the team’s running backs coach this year, is to join Mark Richt’s staff at Miami, multiple people familiar with the situation said on Tuesday.

The offer would include some sort of title, possibly co-offensive coordinator. Richt has said he intends to call plays for the Hurricanes.

Brown’s decision represents a change of heart. He confirmed himself plans to remain with the Bulldogs while he was out on the road recruiting with Smart in the days after new head coach Kirby Smart’s appointment. But Brown was recruited to Georgia by Richt, convinced to try coaching by Richt after Brown’s NFL career ended and lured back to UGA from Wisconsin.

Barring another change of mind, Brown was going to tell players after Tuesday’s practice. He was planning on remaining with the team through the bowl.

Smart announced Tuesday morning that two defensive assistants were being retained: Defensive line coach Tracy Rocker and outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer. (Sherrer is coordinating the defense and moving to coach inside linebackers during bowl practice.)

Three other assistant coaches have been hired: Glenn Schumann to an undefined defensive role, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jim Chaney, and offensive line coach Sam Pittman.

Bryan McClendon, the Bulldogs’ receivers coach and interim head coach, remains in limbo, at least publicly.

Thomas brown has coached some good ones too, last year he had melvin gordon at wisconsin and this year with nuck chubb and sony michel.....

The thing that we lost out on was tracy rocker...... he is a legit D-line coach

Also that means john lilly and bryan mcclendon might be joining brown in miami for coach richt....

Mcclendon is a WR coach so that might mean kevin beard is gone and let the drama with sam bruce begin..... hope he sticks if all this is true

Would be thrilled to get everyone except Rocker, although that would have been a grand slam had we gotten him.

ATHENS — Thomas Brown is not the only Georgia coach following Mark Richt to Miami. Todd Hartley is expected to join the former Bulldogs coach as a defensive assistant, DawgNation has learned. And a few other Georgia coaches may not be far behind.

Bryan McClendon, John Lilly and several other individuals among UGA’s football support staff have been offered opportunities to work with Richt in Miami, persons familiar with situation confirmed Tuesday. Richt accepted the Hurricanes’ head coaching job three days after being fired by Georgia on Nov. 29.

Hartley returned to UGA this past January as director of player personnel after spending three seasons at Marshall coaching safeties and tight ends and serving as recruiting coordinator. He has returned to the field for the Bulldogs’ bowl practices and is coaching safeties.

Hartley previously worked at Georgia as a graduate assistant and assumed the role of interim defensive backs coach for the Independence Bowl in 2009.

Brown, who coaches running backs for the Bulldogs, previously had accepted Kirby Smart’s invitation to remain on his staff at Georgia. But despite vigorous attempts to keep him, Brown decided to accept Richt’s offer, which included a hefty raise and a promotion to some sort of coordinator’s role.

McClendon, who was tabbed Georgia’s interim head coach for the TaxSlayer Bowl, said Monday he is still not sure what his future holds. In addition to joining Richt at Miami, he reportedly has been offered the chance to join Will Muschamp at South Carolina. McClendon currently holds the titles of assistant head coach and receivers coach with the Bulldogs.

Lilly has known Richt since his days at FSU and joined tight ends coach and special teams coordinator in 2008. Lilly is serving Georgia as interim offensive coordinator and calling plays in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

So that makes thomas brown, todd hartley, bryan mcclendon, and john lilly........ not a bad group of guys

HC/OC/QB --- mark richt
RB --- thomas brown
WR --- bryan mcclendon
TE/Special Teams Coordinator --- john lilly
Defensive Assistant --- todd hartley

i would keep james coley as the co-offensive coordinator, and fill the rest of the spots with guys who know the south florida landscape. But more importantly we need guys who can coach and motivate players to be their best. I really like brown, mcclendon, and lilly they are all proven coaches...... dont know too much about hartley.

DL --- kevin patrick
LB --- larry scott ---- think he could handle this
DB --- hurlie brown
DC --- top tier coach.... pay the money will make this team legit
OL --- art kehoe or a young up and comer who is a good talent evaluator and motivator

Richt will not have an "OC" designation.

He is the head coach and will call plays.

Bryan McCledon or John Lilly will be CO-OC with Thomas Brown. The coordinators will install the game plan during the week for Richt.

Lilly may simply take the TE and Asst HC job.

All will be paid very well.

the most important thing now is to get a great defensive coordinator and set up the defensive assistants..... if this is done properly than our defense should be in the top 10 every year with the amount of south florida talent there is

I think Larry Scott will be retained as the OL coach. Just my thought. And the new DC will bring his guys in with him. Whoever that is...

I would rather have Larry Scott coaching the OL over Kehoe. Seems like the big question mark remains the most important hire: DC.

This is all well and good but the DC hire, and subsequently "his" DL hire are the most crucial on this staff and painful for us to wait on.

Im a huge fan of Kevin Beard, I was hoping we'd get McClendon at Rb and keep Beard at Wr. But I'm also a huge fan of Wr, Rb coach combo of Brown and McClendon. McClendon recruited some major talent to Georgia. Michel, Gurley, Chubb, Mckenzie, Crowell. Just go look at his 247 profile.
