Toney Punt Return From the Five was a trick play that would have been an easy TD

Look at the top of the screen. Toney was going to throw across the field. No one was within 50 yards of us.

Unbelievable that the ONE PUNT Indiana executed well was the one time we called that. I was wondering why Toney fielded that punt. Well… now we know

I was wondering too. Unreal. Maybe specials would have made up for the block. Guess we'll never know.

I think you pull that one out of the bag when they are punting from further back in their own territory and the ball won't go further than the 20 yd line. Not Tuesday Morning QBing- you have to practice expecting good punts (again- Indiana doesn't make a lot of mistakes like bad punts so plan for a good kick). If it is, you let it go into the end zone and save it for later. At the 5 yd line if he throws it laterally it is probably to the 3 yd line or maybe into the end zone. If the receiver drops it that's a safety or worse. If you do that at the 20 and the receiver botches it, he still has time to jump on the ball since no one else is around. Calling that at that yardage is being too clever by half.

I think the call is on against certain kicks, if you notice the corner in beginning is outside the gunner, then someone releases from line and picks up the gunner and the corner stays outside.. Most of kicks Mali received near midfield were in middle of field and not near hash, I wonder if the call was on depending on kick, Mali had a couple straight line drives.. sucks either way, would have been an all timer if they pulled off a 90+ yard throw back punt return..

But once he realized it was a great punt, canceling out the throwback -- shouldn't he have let it go?
Of course, but that's a difficult decision to make as a freshman in the natty when you've gotten the call to make this type of play. Makes more sense why he fielded it. I don't love making the call when indiana is kicking from the 40.
