Todd Monken...thoughts?

What happened at Southern Miss?

Looks like he was doing well and then resigned for an NFL OC job?

That’s kind of odd.

Why would he come to college to be an OC? He literally left a HC coach job in college where he turned around an 0-12 program to become an OC in the NFL. Southern Miss was 0-12 the season before he got there. He went 1-11, 3-9, 9-5 (7-1), won their conference and then he went to the NFL when he was a hot commodity and had P5 job offers. He obviously wants to be in the NFL.

He can run an Air Raid system that moves the ball and racks up yards. The concerns are red zone playcalling and sacks/turnovers in an aggressive downfield passing game.

There are better hires and there are worse hires. I prefer an OC with experience in spread option/power run schemes. I like a diverse run game and simplified passing game that can convert short yardage and finish drives with TDs, without the downside risk of deep-drop pass schemes.

Here's one about Todd Monken you'll love - he was part of the dysfunction in Cleveland, lacking professionalism as a coach of that team.

Speaking of disgruntled offensive coordinators, Todd Monken’s one season with the Browns was a disaster. Monken had the offensive coordinator title but Kitchens called the plays, and it was clear that Kitchens and Monken were never on the same page. Multiple sources told The Athletic that late in the season, Monken would spend time on the field before games telling opposing coaches how bad things were with the Browns, calling the team a “total mess” and saying that Kitchens’ Sunday play calling generally steered away from most things that had been in the game plan from Wednesday-Saturday.
