Let’s put the Kool-Aid down for a second and have a rational conversation.

We all love this program.

We are all confident in this team.

But I’m going to stop listening to my heart for a second and give my brain a chance to jump into the discourse.

What concerns us about this matchup? I’ll go first….

1) Our LBs ability to cover their WRs underneath.

2) Keeping Reed contained in the pocket. Broken plays have been our enemy before. The ND and SMU games come to mind. Even the FSU game in the 4th quarter.

3) Beck zeroing in on Toney. Elko is too smart of a coach to allow one player to beat him. His scheme will be structured to neutralize Toney’s impact. Carson has to be patient, go through his progressions, and find the open receiver.

4) WRs other than Toney creating separation. With Toney most likely being bracketed, can CJ take advantage of 1-on-1 opportunities? What about Marion? Mark my words: to win this game, we’re going to need a couple of big time, contested catches from someone other than Toney.

5) Pringle in pass protection. Can he handle what Elko throws at us in 3rd and long situations? We’re going to have to trust him. You can’t only bring him in if we’re running the ball — that’s too predictable.

6) Pre-snap penalties. If we can’t avoid more than one or two of these over the course of the game, we’re probably in bad shape. Getting behind the chains hurts the type of offense Dawson wants to call.

What other things worry you guys?

Our creativity in 3rd and 4th and short situations. I hope Mario gives Dawson free reign to continue operating as he has been last 4 weeks vs going back to bro ball
I think there are opportunities here to break tendencies for big plays…but I’ve also thought that for the last eight or so weeks and we haven’t done it, aside from one play action pass that resulted in a wide open TD (Bauman I believe). If we line up heavy, based on what we’ve put on film, we could sneak an explosive play in the right situation.

I feel like we match up really well with these guys but you hit on a couple of things that worry me too - namely Reed getting outside of the pocket, and their talented receivers in space. If we can stay disciplined and keep Reed in the pocket that will bode very well for us…especially in the first half. When our guys get a little winded, that’s when we’ve seen more breakdowns.

Concepcion definitely worries me, that guy is legit and I wish he had come here instead lol. If Scott is full go and matched up with him in the slot I would feel much better…I hope he’s feeling good, rested, and healthy.

Marion has really come on the second half of the season. With him, a healthy CJD, and 10 out there running their secondary ragged, I think we have ample opportunity to exploit them in the pass game.

Beck will be poised but I do expect them to get pressure, our OL is great but they’re not perfect, and they have a talented DL that excels in creating havoc.

Blitzkrieg coming and they can’t stop us

My biggest concern is being able to take advantage of turnovers.

Have to get tuddys off of TOs, which been lacking in that spot.

This will be the first game in awhile where we won’t see teams going for it on 4th down in the first half on their side of the field or using fake field goals or trickery in awhile.

Most people don’t realize how different our games were compared to the other teams.

I mean Narduzzi basically said it out loud.

I’m not worried about Texas A&M at all.

I think we win easily.

But if I did have one worry…it’s the officiating not calling holding.

Can CJ make the most of his 1-on-1s? Come on now. The best catches we have seen this season have been CJ making a play 1-on-1. Do agree on a lot of the other points though. Overall I like this matchup for us. I think our team as a whole is a notch above A&M.

All teams have weaknesses that can be exploited.

All teams.

Including whoever ends up winning the whole thing this year. Hopefully us.

Some of the points you brought up are reasonable. Especially #1, and the part about keeping Reed contained is the most important one of all, and to a lesser extent, #6. But everything else being equal, keeping him contained I think determines whether we win or not.

But as a rule, I don’t worry about anything. whatever happens happens. As long as the team is well prepared and has a reasonable game plan, I can’t ask for anything else.

Concerns:

1. Our LBs being exposed. Toure is more lost than last year’s Easter eggs in coverage. D. Smith has been playing better, but he takes bad angles, picks the wrong holes, and isn’t a great tackler.

2. Penalties.

3. Carter Davis. Dude hasn’t kicked in a game like this ever.

4. Officials

5. Tackling in space.

Confidence:

1. They won’t be able to run the ball.

2. Offense innovation. Mario knows he’s close to a title. He’s going to let Dawson scheme and trick. I think we are going to see something that we haven’t yet (and that is saying a lot because we’ve seen a WR throw a TD pass, a QB catch a TD pass, a flea flicker, and a OT catch a TD pass). I think we attack the perimeter with outside zones, tosses, and reverses.

3. Toney. Their slot CB Chappell ABSOLUTELY SUCKS.

4. Beck on the mark. He’s been in the zone since SMU with his accuracy. Since SMU Beck: 89/112 11TDs 1INTs.

Thats 80% comp. % and 38ppg.

5. Defense. We are elite.

Miami wins 31-13

Big DT over our center.
Shallow Crossers by their two WRs with room to run like Bell for UL.
Bain and Mesidor getting gassed
Toure covering anything but the grass in front of him
Our TE expected to do much.
Howell without any chips on 3rd and long
