largest hurdle in my opinion is protecting the ball

it started at USF, continued at GT, UNC and Wake. VT was the pinnacle that caught up to us..

Others

1. Turnovers ( players)
2. Scheme on D ( coaches)
3. Tackling worst I have seen in years ( both)
4. moving the chains horrible for 3rd in a row ( both)
5. game plan (coaches )
6. execution ( players)

I still think we protect the ball we score more on USF, Wake and hold GT to under 20 points..FSU was just better,
VT was on turnovers and the D extincting, tackling and put into bad position to stop the same plays from VT over and over....

I think if this team has any HEART or PULSE they win this week with no turnovers, simple game plan on both sides..get after the QB we can go 3-0

If coaches are willing to change then so will the players

Explain.

If Coley opens up the playbook, Morris will develop pocket presence and touch?

If D steals Saban's playbook, Highsmith will become average and the players will tackle better?

Add to the list:
Short yardage, third-down offense
Truck-load of 300 pound offensive linemen that under achieve and aren't particularly physical
Offense that for the last 4-5 years can't define itself . . . what are we trying to be?

Duke will eat this defense alive if we dont adjust and stop leaving the middle of the field open for 5 yard passes + YAC all day.

We tackled VERY well to start the season. Don't know what happened.

Neither does anyone else, pathetic and one of the reasons cannot get off the field on third down. We missed more tackles then we made and there is nothing more fundamental than tackling IMO.

Upgrade the talent and we will be fine. We have one great player as of now and he's hurt. We don't win much with one great player. The 2001 team was loaded with them, we need to upgrade. It's coming, just slower than we want. We are an average team, the best coaches in the country couldn't do much for us right now, it is what it is.

All repairable

Coaches need to coach better
Players need to play better
Fans need to show the f.uck up for games

We tackled VERY well to start the season. Don't know what happened.

So the players were trained to tackle, did it well and are now not executing that craft the same way?

After reading that again, I can only conclude that the scheme being employed is the no tackle defense and the fault rests entirely with Coach D and Swasey. Yes, Swasey too. Team no longer strong enough to tackle.

The issues aren't coaching. The issue is talent and depth. The only reason Miami is 7-0 to start the season was due to coaching. The roster is currently at 75 and still has a lot of room to upgrade the talent. Golden is a beast recruiter and will continue to grind until the roster is loaded once again. He was handed a pile of **** and done more with that than most coaches could. The D-line is lacking. The LB's are still lacking. The safeties are lacking. How do you expect a top notch defense without top notch talent on that defense? The fans unrealistic expectations are what has caused this emotional hysteria. Sound like a bunch of focking females.

the fundamental problem with this team is the pathetic defense. and that is a core coaching problem. period

I respectively disagree that the issue is talent and depth and not on the coaching and schemes being run. While we don't currently have the quality and quantity depth to make a legitimate NC or even ACC title run, our current talent level is much better than it has been and than the current execution is showing, especially on defense. Good coaching is a lot more than just recruiting and teaching players schemes. Good coaches recognize and understand the strengths and weaknesses of their players and ADJUST the schemes and game plans to put the players they have in positions to be successful. I would submit to you our defensive play for the past two seasons as prime evidence our coaches are not doing that but are trying to force the current players to play in a scheme that they are either not physically capable of executing and/or are not mentally capable of grasping. Poor play in the first few games can be chalked up to new players still learning a scheme. After two years of the same results you have to look very hard at the coaches and their apparent inability to adjust their system to their personnel's skill sets.

So who are the great players on D this year? Now compare them to the 2001 team, do we have one that can dominate? I think not!

irrepairable: damaged psyche of small minded fan base. Who are still trapped in the 1990s

Yes if Golden abandons his scheme and fires his defensive coordinator. Golden then must hire a solid DC and remain hands off mostly like he is with the offense. Do that and we are in great shape. Do it not and well its not gonna be pretty. But make no mistake golden has to make a change on the defensive front.

Lets just ignore the fact that our early schedule was very soft and we barely scraped by a few of those games.

The problem with the OL is that they are maulers that should be asked to drive block in a power running scheme and James Coley seems to think the are the 98 Denver Broncos.
