This team reminded me so much of the 1999 canes team.

I’ve said this all year, but this team really reminds me of the 1999 Canes. Talented roster, but clearly flawed and missing some key pieces.

Yeah, we made it to the title game, but if we’re being honest, the roster wasn’t complete. We were thin at linebacker, didn’t really have a true difference-maker at tight end, and the receiver room never developed the way it needed to.

A few recruiting misses at WR and TE really showed up over the course of the season.
Beck kind of reminds me of Kenny Kelly. Solid, serviceable, but not that elite, game-changing guy. And when I look at the defense, that’s where it really stands out. We don’t have Nate Webster, Dan Morgan, or Vilma types running the show. No true alpha at linebacker. Same thing on the back end safety play just isn’t at that elite Miami standard yet.

Good team, no doubt. But still a step away from being that team.

I think we overachieved given our limitations. Anyone would have thought a win in the first round on the road was the logical ceiling but subsequent wins over OSU and Ole Miss had us thinking team of destiny.

Going forward, I feel like we need aspects of the Cam Ward offense in the sense that we lacked explosiveness. Need to be able to both pound the rock AND score quickly, depending on what the game calls for. As for the defense, we lose a lot but hoping the young guys can see the standard that was set and keep things moving.

Agreed. Offense becomes easier when you have a guy who can stretch the field, along with a legit TE. Daniels and Marion are solid, reliable players who'll make catches for you, as we saw all year, but let's be real, they didn't even threaten the average ACC defensive backfield, much less that of any of the playoff teams. Toney is great and will only get better, but that's not really his game. I'd like to see how good he can be if we do get that deep threat. Then, teams won't be able to key in on him anymore, and he'll be even more effective.

Mix of 1999 and 2000. The UW loss was very similar to the game last night. Offense couldn’t get going until late, D just couldn’t get one more key stop. We lost Morgan, Wayne, Moss etc from that 2000 team and 2001 happened. Let’s see

Yeah, when I look at it, I really think we’re just a few pieces away from being really good. Hopefully this year we nail the evaluations, both in the portal and with the incoming freshmen. If we get that part right, I think that’s the difference between just being solid and making a real, legitimate run.

Yeah. And, while I know Beck did make plays throughout the year and some crucial ones in the playoffs...I really want to see more dynamic QB play again.

If we're being fair and honest with ourselves, this was a particularly brutal 4-game gauntlet that more often than not would have tripped up even some of the better teams of all time, at some point. Yet it was there to be had, with just a couple more plays. Both encouraging, and painful.
