U-Tough

Yeah, I'm all in. I know, I know, every team has their own version, but I firmly believe under Golden that Miami- in due time- will be among the strongest and most physical teams in the country, right up there with anyone in the SEC. And for those who say there hasn't been a problem, well, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

To me, it's like boxing( which I cover for a living), there are fighters who act like fighters 365 days out of the year, and those who just happen to make weight. The guys who are really the pound-for-pound elite in this sport, understand that the fight doesn't begin after you touch'em up in the center off the ring after the referee tells you to. It doesn't even start when you sign the bout contract or the opening press conference. The truly great fighter understands - and has a mindset- that when you see another boxer on the way up who may be a threat, mentally, those guys already begin to dissect and analyze them as foes. They don't ever have to 'get into shape' because they're never out of it. A determination that is almost an obsession, it's the way Marvin Hagler was( who used to go away to far away training camps he'd call 'jail') or Bernard Hopkins( whom I'm very familiar with) who was flat out paranoid.

The bottom line is, this is a 365 day commitment to be a championship level program- Mark D'onofrio, said in when he first came to UM, they want guys who do something related to football every **** day of the year throughout their tenure at Coral Gables. That's the culture change that was needed for years. It wasn't about NFL U, futures on Sunday and signing bonuses( and you saw who left early this spring). There is a program-building plan that is implemented each day. Stuff Coker and Shannon had no concept off.

Miami has been talented( they still send more than their share of talent to the combine and draft, can't argue with the numbers) but it hasn't equated to wins. In fact, per draftees, Miami probably has the worst ratio of wins-per-player drafted the past couple of years. It's telling. And means that while there is talent, it's not a tough team/program.

I love the whole mentality of U-Tough and competing from Feb to August, when as Golden says,'The DNA of your team is set.'( or something to that effect). I think a very solid foundation is being set, here...

Good stuff man. Yes every team has their version. I believe after a while though the bamas and lsus of the world start to coast. We are at that beginning point where everyone is buying in. We very well could be... gasp...getting better.

Yeah, complacency kills desire. It's where success can hide flaws. It happened to Miami late in the Dennis Erickson tenure. Across the board, the work ethic of the program declined and when Brad Roll left( who was crazy from what I'm told), things went downhill.

But this comes down to really getting talent, and then getting that talent to buy-in. I'd like to think Golden is getting there. And the reality is, to win a national title, you gotta be as big, physical and strong as an SEC team. I think it's the way it is and I can start to see evidence that Miami is getting there

Its obvious. Every year you hear about these greentree all Americans. Only difference is this time, you can actually see the improvement at least as far as bulking up goes. Look what Miami did from. 02 to 06 with bad coaching. Shannon wasn't great, no, but he wasn't exactly given the keys to the proverbial Ferrari. Even 09 we had a decent year with him at the helm. I sincerely believe golden is at the very least a decent coach. That's what we have been lacking. We will get better. Championship better? Remains to be seen. Better nonetheless.

And here's a player who individually has bought into the U-Tough mentality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=FIHdnJ0XfXg

I think Eduardo Clements is the quintessential Golden guy. No, he's not Edgerrin James but last year he slowly emerged as a steady contributor( by the end of the year I thought he was the Canes best short-yardage back and a dependable reciever). But again, a guy who has bought in, taken ownership of his place in the program and instead of being a guy who just hung around for 4 or 5 years, is leaving a mark

A team full of OT's can get you places....

Just the sheer numbers of guys who can bench 225 a certain amount of times( I forgot how many) is an indicator of what you speak off. But I don't think there's any doubt there is an increased emphasis on the process, rather than just the result( which can hide a lot of cracks in the foundation)

The countdown is in the 70s, but needs an accelerant. Come on Nebraska.

Firing Day is 79 away.
