Yeah, I'm all in. I know, I know, every team has their own version, but I firmly believe under Golden that Miami- in due time- will be among the strongest and most physical teams in the country, right up there with anyone in the SEC. And for those who say there hasn't been a problem, well, we'll just have to agree to disagree.
To me, it's like boxing( which I cover for a living), there are fighters who act like fighters 365 days out of the year, and those who just happen to make weight. The guys who are really the pound-for-pound elite in this sport, understand that the fight doesn't begin after you touch'em up in the center off the ring after the referee tells you to. It doesn't even start when you sign the bout contract or the opening press conference. The truly great fighter understands - and has a mindset- that when you see another boxer on the way up who may be a threat, mentally, those guys already begin to dissect and analyze them as foes. They don't ever have to 'get into shape' because they're never out of it. A determination that is almost an obsession, it's the way Marvin Hagler was( who used to go away to far away training camps he'd call 'jail') or Bernard Hopkins( whom I'm very familiar with) who was flat out paranoid.
The bottom line is, this is a 365 day commitment to be a championship level program- Mark D'onofrio, said in when he first came to UM, they want guys who do something related to football every **** day of the year throughout their tenure at Coral Gables. That's the culture change that was needed for years. It wasn't about NFL U, futures on Sunday and signing bonuses( and you saw who left early this spring). There is a program-building plan that is implemented each day. Stuff Coker and Shannon had no concept off.
Miami has been talented( they still send more than their share of talent to the combine and draft, can't argue with the numbers) but it hasn't equated to wins. In fact, per draftees, Miami probably has the worst ratio of wins-per-player drafted the past couple of years. It's telling. And means that while there is talent, it's not a tough team/program.
I love the whole mentality of U-Tough and competing from Feb to August, when as Golden says,'The DNA of your team is set.'( or something to that effect). I think a very solid foundation is being set, here...
