The Orange Bowl Story (1970)

I actually watched this. I am so thankful I got down there in 07 and got to walk the field and go in the locker rooms. I will never forget that day.

Most amazing line in that video " Georgia Techs 1940 razzle dazzle offense" Hahaha

I know we've all reminisced about the Orange Bowl ad nauseam I know I know

And now the Canes and Dolphins are only left with The Orange Bowl Curse after the city decided to discard America's most identifiable arena of champions. Can you imagine some greedy Roman politicians doing that to the Colosseum or some Athenian politicians doing it to the Panathenaic Stadium? And they had a couple thousand years. But Miami decided to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I saw Joe Namath there when he had the Fu Man Chu for a minute and came up to a bunch of us kids. Saw Dan Marino break five NFL passing records the last monday night of the season. And, at the Bay of Pigs, Cubans presented President John F. Kennedy with their flag (yes, they actually asked for it back because he didn't provide the promised air support). They played MLB there - Sweet Jay-Seuse what were they thinking.

Still remember my first game in that place.

West Endzone general admission. Beautiful field. The urinals were classic. The city of Miami in the background.

And oh, yeah, Miami beating Florida State!!!

Countless times uniformed cops arresting off duty cops because the off duty cops got into fights in the stands. All kinds of beat downs in that west Endzone. Nothing like it.

aside from the fact it had likely 1,000s of health, safety, and building code violations it was the best. I was at the final game and due to those building code violations we were legit able to pull up seats and walk out with them so I aint complaining. But that is why when other fans talk crap about us playing at hard rock I do not discount it entirely. Yes hard rock is way nicer, yes when it is a big game that place gets just as loud as the OB, but it does not feel like a college stadium.

My first game at the OB was the season opener in 1964. Charlie Tate's first year as HC. The Noles beat us 14-0, on two TD receptions by future HoFer Fred Biletnikoff. Interestingly, the Canes starting QB that night was his brother, Bob Biletnikoff.

In my years at UM, I never saw a day game as all games were played at night back then. In addition to UM games, saw the 1965 battle between Gables and the Stingarees (about 45,000 there for that epic HS matchup), and the 1966 Orange Bowl game where Bama pounded Nebraska, behind QB Steve Sloan throwing to WR Ray Perkins.

My father spent 25 years in the bowels of the grand old lady. Hired as a janitor in 1956 and worked his way up to Stadium Manager in 1960. Forced by the city to retire in 1979 due to a city policy that required all city employees to retire at age 69.

I saw the 1969 Super Bowl upset by the Jets over the Colts and the 3 other Super Bowls in the 70’s plus many Cane and Phins games in between.

A lot of times fans would just stay seated and pull out there German helmet quietly and begin streaming while sitting there with a grin.

How do I know, it was impossible with the amount of beer he was processing to never leave his seat for 5-6 hours including pregame.

Wow. Wish I'd still been in Miami for SB III with the Jets. I still can't believe the Baltinore Colts lost that one. They were unbelievably dominant that season, even moreso than the undefeated Dolphin team a few yrs later.

Namath called it but no one believed it. Quick story. Couple of Colts fans sitting behind us. The 2 fellas had a briefcase with a mini bar in it. They also had a cowbell they rang every time the Colts made a good play. My ears were still ringing when I got home.

The 70’s and the OB very special combination the memories started on Friday nights.
The uniform colors were nothing like the once were accustomed to as the mid to late 70’s.

Ole folks will remember those Friday nights

Tough, low-scoring defensive struggle if I recall. Stings ended Gables 28 game win streak. Gables was #1 in the state, Miami High #2.

Gables had the ultra-skinny QB Larry Rentz (went to UF) who was held in check. Miami High wore those Midnight Blue unis. Huge crowd. I said 45,000 but that was probably low.

Sure do. Our home unis in the mid-60s had dark gold pants, white jersey with green numbers, bright gold helmets. No orange anywhere to be found. No logo either.
