The more I read other posters write about Mark and looked a little close at what he's done at Kentucky, the more he moves up my rankings. He checks off so many boxes:
  • His teams are disciplined
  • His teams are tough
  • He faces the best competition in the best conference in football and holds his own
  • Although for some, this would actually be a negative, but I like it that he not only coached for us and did a great job, but also he was with us during our last glory years.
  • If this matters at all, he comes from the most famous coaching family in college football (three of them were/are HC's at D1 schools).
I still prefer Mario and Lane, but upon further reflection, he very well might be the answer. Especially if we whiff on the first two.

After that 2018 season i would have loved to have him and overlooked everything else because of the season he had.

I'd like to see more upsets vs some good SEC teams. He's had some good games against UF and beat them once. It's Kentucky... but I just don't see him bringing any schematic edge similar to what Mullen did at Miss St. He makes us more competitive but I don't see anything more than 9-10 wins.

Mario gives you a dominant edge in recruiting, Kiffin and Freeze = offense and recruit themselves.

We could do worse. A lot would depend on his staff. I could see him bringing Dorsey to be the OC but I'm not sure how attached he is to his current OC that he took off the Rams staff.

I'd put Stoops in the same bucket as Napier but Napier has more wiggle room because he has the Alabama and Clemson pedigree and connections.. and he calls his own offense meaning he has more to spend on a DC and can scoop up some killers on the recruiting trail.

I worry about Napier. I like stoops. Mario will out recruit anyone you named though. I have to give him that. he'd own so fla.

Not to hijack my own thread, but I always respect your take on things, so with that said.... do you think Freeze is a possibility? I haven't given him much thought because of the soft-shouldered nature of our BOT's. Do you think they would allow Freeze to come here considering his past at Ole ****?

Regarding Mark and UM, we'll only know if they hire him, but I think he could have the right mixture as HC. Also, and I've beaten this drum for years, if you win 9-10 games consistently at UM, you will increase the level of talent and that win total starts heading toward a solid 10 wins a season and then everything comes together and everyone screams "The U is back!" for a season, which begets more talent, etc.

Think about it, we have not had 3 seasons in a row where we won a minimum of 9 games in a looooooonnnggg time. We just show that consistency and we'll slowly build this place again.

Mario over Stoops because of local recruiting ties, but Stoops is a good Head Coach.
Yeah, I agree. I think my current (not that my opinion matters even a tiny bit, but...) is 1. Mario 2. Lane. 3. Mark

But, I would be vey open to Freeze if our weak-kneed BOT's would allow someone with a checkered past.

Coming from G5 scares me. That's my holdout on Napier.

Aside from Matt Campbell being above average at Iowa State - who is the last HC to come into the P5 from a G5 school and win at a high level?

It's all been top notch assistants or guys that have went from one P5 HC job to another that are good. Brian Kelly might be the only other one i can think of coming from Cincinnati to ND. Freeze was good for Ole Miss but still lost 3+ every year.

The recent hot names from G5 - Norvell - bum, Taggart - bum, Fuente - bum, McElwain - bum, Satterfield - hasn't worked yet, Drinkwitz - too early to tell, Geoff Collins - hasn't won yet, Bronco Mendenhall - hasn't won anything yet, Charlie Strong - bum, Tom Herman - didn't win anything, Butch Jones - bum.

Obviously I'm not going to count Kiffin coming from FAU because he had 2 P5 jobs before that.

Stoops is a good fourth or fifth option. He may not clean up in recruiting but top 15-20 should be expected with him at the helm.

He’s shown sustainable success at UK but I do worry that it’s a bit of fool’s gold because the rest of SEC East has been trash at different points in his tenure, except UGA.

You need someone who’s gonna go toe to toe with Mack rn. He’s recruiting like a monster and I’m two or three years 9-3 probably won’t win the Coastal.

Stoops is okay. By now in his career I would have thought he would have made a bigger move from time to time, but they are consistently okay and have been for a while with him. Agree on not getting any real schematic edge with him.

The guy I’m interested in his year 3 is Neal Brown at WVU. He was great at Troy, three straight double digit winning seasons and upset LSU. At WVU they are slowly getting better. I’d like to see them make a bigger jump this year to 9 wins or more but he’s definitely an interesting possibility. Now is the time for them to make a jump and to show he can be a real power five possibility. They play Oklahoma this weekend who seem down relative to prior years.

Jay, you mentioned Herman - what happened there? If ever there was a coach who I thought would absolutely kill it once he got a big job, was Herman because of what he did in a short amount of time at Houston. I mean that and Willie Williams not being an all star are a couple of the great CFB failures that defy all logic and indicators. What's your theory on Herman?

Chip Kelly?

Don't know about Neal Brown but he tried to get away from WVU last year by putting his name in a couple of coaching search (South Carolina for sure).

I like Freeze. I think he's the equivalent to Kiffin maybe a small step down. I think he wins 10 games here with ease and has us in the playoffs when/if he gets a 1st round type at QB. Dan Mullen type offensive guru with a higher recruiting ability.

As far as us hiring him or not based on his past.. I'm gonna lean towards them avoiding that as long as who is in charge is still here.
