Top defensive lineman of the midseason
DT Gerald Willis, Miami. The former blue-chip Florida Gators recruit has blossomed after a lot of ups and downs earlier in his college career. A big key to his breakout season was reshaping his body. He says he went from weighing 285 with 30 percent body fat to 300 pounds with only 22 percent. The upshot is one big, explosive and nasty dude. He was a huge problem for LSU in the opener, notching four tackles for loss, and has kept giving offenses fits with 13 TFLs. Willis’ disruptive presence is a major reason why the ’Canes lead the nation in TFLs with 81 — 20 more than any other team.
Others in the mix: Quinnen Williams, Alabama; Jerry Tillery, Notre Dame; Ed Oliver, Houston; Jachai Polite, UF, Chase Winovich, Michigan.
Nice to see #9 getting so much praise as his hard work last year on the scout team and his performance on the field this season makes it well deserved. I wish he could stop doing the bonehead sh-t but I guess you sometimes have to take the good with the bad when you have a dog who plays like that.
