I must start this thread with a confession:

I know nothing about art, other than what I love of art.

I have been frustrated by my love of a piece by American artist Thomas Cole: ‘Expulsion, Moon & Firelight’.

I am in the process of studying it in detail, and have been dismayed by the very narrow amount of audio commentary I can find on this piece. ‘The Course of Empire’ has limitless resources and commentaries, but not Expulsion.

There may be no one on this forum who can elevate my understanding on this piece, but it made me want to start an art appreciation thread. Please share pieces you love, and any supplementary commentary to assist others in out understanding.

The journey has begun.

I formerly worked for a company that provided art advisory services. At one seminar, the art advisor played a game and showed photographs of several pieces that had recently sold at auction and asked the attendees to guess the selling price. No one was even close.

As one example that I remember (I dont remember the paintings), she showed Churchill's tobacco set. The audience went wild and guessed hundreds of thousands into the low millions. Selling price? $35K.

The next piece was JFK's golf bag. Since everyone assumed it sold below Churchill, they were all wrong. $125K.

The lesson: Beauty/art is in the eyes of the beholder.

p.s. For about $50K, I can hook you up with an art advisor.

Thanks, Spike. I agree, you value what you love.

If I give you 50k, how much can we each make off it?

My daughter was in Madrid last year and went to galleries and museums all over the city. At the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, she saw this piece and said she likes it, but has no idea why. It's called Jumanji Learns Fire by Robert Nava.

I wouldnt make anything, but theoretically you would have a much improved appreciation and be a much better investor. I know a number of folks that have done it for one year just to learn, others continue with the AA to scour auctions, private sales, etc. The AA's also make sense if you want to sell art, because they can give you price estimates and generally have wholesale rates with the auction houses. It may be less than $50K BTW

For those of you who live in South Florida, Norman Braman periodically opens his house up for charity events. He has a multi billion dollar art collection, inside and outside his estate. Worth doing at least once for the experience.
