It’s straight forward and has always been true— the three key components to being a winner in ANYTHING are— but especially for this game are the following:
In sports competition of every kind, we screen out kids at the first level based on their SKILL LEVEL (ie. rating). The Canes have had decent recruiting classes for being a bottom dweller program for 18years... Any decent recruiting is mostly the benefit of being in SOFL and having “The U” mystique still carrying much of our recruiting juice,.... But you look at this team right now and you see clearly that we are maybe in the 20’s at best with skill players... The big gorillas of Bama, Clemson, OU and Georgia have purchased all the top 200 kids for years on end.
HARDWORK:
Manny presser last week about poor practice already says it all. These kids were taking it easy after their near loss to CMU and thinking “it’s bye week—-imma thinking about getting a piña colada on South Beach later....”
BELIEF:
Sports history is full of moments where low-ranked teams beat the superior teams— riding on BELIEF they are better. Passion is The X Factor in sports that you cannot predict or control. It comes from the coaches and the special players who can will their teams into believing they can play at a high level. The teams MOST VULNERABLE to losing faith are YOUNG teams who have not learned toughness and belief in themselves.
In the 15years since 2001– what we’ve been seeing with Miami is a yearly tendency to tank and crash everytime they lose games— that’s because they lose Faith they are good. They lose trust in themselves. I believe the near collapse at CMU was this team “nearly” tanking due to disappointment and apathy about a low ranked team that they assumed they would sleep walk over. IT nearly cost them a 3rd loss.
Look, I believe this team has the ability to go 10-2 this season and face Clemson. And based on what UNC did, this team has the “ability” to go toe-toe with Clemson as well. Whether that will happen depends on the team BELIEVING it and working their asses off for it. This is where COACHES and SENIOR players are responsible for rallying the troops.
This is a rebuilding year....
We ain’t winning the Championship...
Improvement every game is our “championship” for this year...
I’m looking forward to the VT game and see what this team is made of...
Go Canes...
