That Nickel performance was badly needed

Thought I heard it was announced we aren’t going to the portal for QB next year.

Better show incoming players what we have to work with.

Keep playing him.

You can't glean anything from these games.

I like Luk5 & think he can be a solid QB in due time.

But games against FAMU, Bethune etc, tell us absolutely nothing.
 
Luke Nickel better be prepared to win a job from whoever QB1 is in the portal.

We set the standard. We pay top dollar for the best.

Yeah, I think it's to be determined whether we add a portal guy or not. I think Mario would prefer to go with what we have in the room already (including Abrams coming in). But if we're really not comfortable with that in a few months, that could change.

If Nickel keeps playing the way he did when he gets opportunities throughout the year, he might make Mario's decision for him, but in this era of the portal if there's a clear elite QB who wants to be in Coral Gables, I think Mario & Company would definitely take a look at that option.
 
Still need to see more of Nickel, but comparisons to Emory or Garcia are misguided.

Emory looked stiff and robotic, and Garcia couldn't throw a spiral.

It just looks different with Nickel. He's fluid in his movements, and he seems to be accurate. Can he diagnose real defenses, handle pressure, etc...?

We'll see.

Playing QB is mainly about processing quickly and delivering the mail accurately. I *think* Nickel has the accuracy component, and he doesn't spazz when pressured.

Good marks so far. If he were the real deal, it would take this program to the next level.

His arm strength, trajectory and placement of his throws were surprising and impressive...

Yup. That's why I say it's yet to be determined. Staff will need more than a game (6 throws?) against FAMU to really judge him.

I think the coaches would be very happy to stay with what we already have if they think that's a wise option.
