Tell me about Chud

He's certainly an X and O's guy and has a reputation for being great with QB's. He knows what south florida is about and know's what type of defense to run in Miami.

Just looking at what he's done as a coordinator:

Had a Derek Anderson lead Browns team 8th in total offense in 07. Had a huge drop off in 08 after his offensive line completely fell apart. Then he went to Carolina with a rookie QB and ranked 7th in total offense, then 12th the next year.

Had a terrible 4-12 season as head coach of the Browns in 2013 with a terrible roster.

Sounds like a pretty strong resume for a guy who's pretty much a consultant with the Colts.

What's the knock on him, why doesn't he have a more involved role right now? Last time he was here I was too young to even know he existed. What's the main gripe about him as a college coach?

I personally like him. Because he is a good x and o coach. But if he hates recruiting like others have said then i dont want him.
 
Chud is boring man. He has no fire. Did not do well as a HC, his offenses were predicable, although I do like the pro offense he runs.
I guess to me he just hasn't proven to be winning Head coach in college football. We need a proven dude, not a project.
 
You could bring in a Chud HC- Mario OC combo. Chud handles the X&Os and Mario can go bonkers on the recruiting trail. Chud would bring in a quality DC as well and replace Swazey as strength coach.

I'll just copy and paste what I wrote about him in another thread:

- Currently a "special assistant" with the Colts, where they have a boatload of skill talent and are underachieving badly on offense. Chud is supposedly an offensive mind. No impact whatsoever.
- Went 4-12 in his only year as a head coach. Got fired immediately.
- Supposedly hates recruiting.
- Hasn't coached at the college level in any capacity in 12 years.
- Hasn't evaluated high school talent in 12 years.
- Golden-like demeanor. Very bland. No attitude
- But hey, he had one good season as the OC in Carolina during Cam's rookie year. So yay...

South Florida recruits would respond to this hire with a collective fart noise and this program will officially die. F*** everything if he's the hire.

What style offense will Chudzinski employ?

It’s the same physical run/vertical pass system Turner used as Jimmy Johnson’s coordinator with the Cowboys in the 1990s and then took to San Diego as head coach. Chudzinski already was learning it at University of Miami before he joined Turner with the Chargers as an assistant coach in 2005.

“It’s an attacking style,” Chudzinski said. “I like to be balanced. Balance to me does not mean we’re going to throw the ball and run it the same amount of times. Balance to me means you run it when you need to run it to win, and throw it when you need to throw it to win. You have to be able to win games in different ways. You have to win a low-scoring game in snow or a high-scoring shootout. You have to be able to do both.”

What about his defense? Will he keep the 4-3 system already in place or change to the 3-4?

Chudzinski said the exact configuration of the defense would be determined by his coordinator, but he expects to be able to run either – or both.

“We’re going to be an attacking style defense, going to create turnovers, want to get after the quarterback and affect the quarterback’s play,” he said. “That’s the No. 1 thing you can do as a defense. Whether that’s a 4-3 or a 3-4 … nowadays, there’s a lot of hybrid systems out there. It will tie in more with the coordinator I hire. I think we have the opportunity to go either way.”

What I take away from Chud's offensive philosophy is the word "smart." He's not going to re-invent the wheel nor would we see the "dart board" offense we seem to employ now. He adapts his plays to his players (ran lots of Auburn zone-read with Cam in Carolina which is way out of his comfort zone.) He seems to teach well - most NFL players speak highly of his attention to detail.

Specifically, he'd probably employ a pro-style offense here - vertical passing, play-action, power run game. My guess is he would incorporate elements of the spread as needed to maximize So. Fla speed as he did with Newton in Carolina.

In all, I'm not enamored with Chud the "personality" as a head coach, but as an intelligent stabilizing force and with some dynamic coordinators, I absolutely could see it working. He's probably my 4th choice behind Herman, Butch, and Fuente, and would be the least "offensive" (pun intended) of the "Miami Men" we've been hearing about - certainly better than Schiano or Mario, IMO.

1. He's not better than Butch.
2. He's not as good as Butch.
3. He's not Butch.

My thoughts exactly. At least he has a better pedigree than Cristobal and isn't as abrasive as Schiano.
 
First, just to get something off my chest....it doesn't sit well with me how some on these boards say that Chud or Mario suck. These are great ex-Canes. We talk about how important former players are but then why do we dump on these guys? Maybe they aren't a good fit for Miami right now, or people think there are better candidates out there, and it's fine to say that, but i don't see any need to treat them like dirt.

Getting back on topic, i think Chud could be great at Miami. His record as a head coach in the NFL doesn't mean much to me. A lot of that comes down to how well an organization is run. I've heard that players really like him, that he has good rapport with them and is respected for being a straight-shooter. But on the other hand he hasn't coached in college football for about 15 years. So we just don't know how good he would be at implementing his offensive schemes at the college level anymore. Maybe they'd prove too complex, much like the situation with our current defense. I'm sure he would be aware of that and adjust accordingly, but there might be some growing pains in that area. Moreover, how is he at assembling a staff? And at evaluating high school players, not to mention persuading them?

In my opinion he would be a risky hire and wouldn't be my top target. Just too many unknown factors. But if the decision were to come down to the ex-Miami guys (Chud, Mario, Schiano) i would prefer we roll the dice with Chud because i think he could be great for Kaaya and the other young guns we have lined up behind him.

Anyone who is even remotely okay with Chud has had their expectations severely lowered by the incompetence of this program over the last decade. Not a single person on this board should be okay with having $4 million to spend on a head coach only to turn around and hire Chud.

This is sad.

Crossover hit it on the nail. Would be a good coach but he's not the whole package which is what the program needs.

Dud is a wet blanket hire. He's an awful candidate people cling to because he was here at some point. **** that guy.
