I looked at the games in which a Power 5 team played a Group of 5 team this week. To be fair to all parties, only four of the games were played on the road by the Power 5 team. Last week, Miami fared quite well in these metrics. This week, the defense is did not fare well at all. There were 28 games this week, which presents a decent sample size- you generally want a sample size of 30 if you can.
In yards per play, Miami ranked 27th out of 28 defenses, or in the 7th percentile.
In yards per pass, Miami ranked 9th out of 28 defenses, or in the 69th percentile.
In yards per rush, Miami ranked dead last. 28th out of 28. This fell within the 4th percentile.
Florida held their opponent to -0.59 yards per adjusted rush, and completely shut East Carolina down on the ground. They gave it up through the air though.
Clemson destroyed App State to the tune of 1.65 yards per play, which is actually better than we fared against Bethune.
Ohio State held Hawaii to 2.70 YPP.
Wisconsin held Miami, OH to 2.71 YPP.
Basically, it was a really poor defensive performance, and when you allow 6.76 yards per carry, it makes you wonder why FAU didn't actually run the ball even more, and if they didn't have some silly turnovers, we might have actually been in trouble in this game. I'm interested to review the 3rd quarter to see if we actually changed anything, or if FAU just screwed the pooch. Disappointing followup to the impressive numbers in the first game.
