This is never a good sign.
Now, there are some areas where we are doing well:
Yards Per Carry we are tied for 5th;
3rd Down Defense tied for 18th.
However, there are many more numbers that are discouraging and a sign of trouble.
This is Manny's side of the ball. He's been here 3 years as defensive coordinator. He's helped recruit and coach all of these players on defense. He hired the assistants and the coordinator over there. You usually want your main guy's side of the ball to be humming and your bread and butter. That has not been the case and it is concerning.
Hopefully Manny is the cerebral, self-aware guy some people think he is and is capable of making the neccessary adjustments and/or coaching changes to find a solution, but for now -- Let's take a deep and sensual dive into some troubling stats.
# Enos' pace of play on offense has resulted in Miami being tied for 18th in the country in total plays faced as a defense.
# Miami is 7th in the country in time of possession.
# Miami's defense is ranked 101st in yards-per-play allowed.
# In two games, only one defensive lineman has recorded a sack for the defense: Gregory Rousseau.
# Miami is dead last in the country in opponent 4th down conversions, allowing 5 of 5 attempts to be converted.
# Miami ranks 126th in college football in yards-per-pass attempt.
# Miami is tied for 80th in long scrimmage plays allowed; a startling stat considering how few plays they've defended thanks to offensive pace.
# Miami is tied for 76th in the country for red zone conversion percentage.
Two games in, and last year's problem of the defense never getting off the field has been fixed by playing at the pace of a snail fart.
HOWEVER, our defense finds itself with:
1). A horrid pass defense
2). A unit allowing an obscene amount of big passing plays
3). A group that can't/isn't allowed to reach the Quarterback
What Will Mandy Do?
1). Take over playcylling from Blake Baker?
2). Adjust the defensive philosphy/scheme to one that actually wants to pressure the QB?
3). Stop putting slow safeties he's rebranded as 'strikers' in man coverage on fast slot WRs?
4). Build a time machine to go back and land a couple of those elite corner that told us to fvck our own faces?
5). Hire a safeties coach that wasn't slinging Mai Tais at a Buffalo-area airport Chili's a couple years ago?
6). Allow his best pass rusher to go after the QB instead of becoming the world's largest spy?
7). Release the raw power of Rosseau and Hill instead of letting Slow Patchan get burn?
8). Examine if his hiring of Stroud was the worst decision of his life?
9). Try to get a guy like Huff on the field since our overrated backers struggle in space?
10). Ask Rump why his corners keep getting toasted like the top of a delicious creme brûlée?
We will find out. Obviously we have two glorified scrimmages ahead of us, so it's the perfect time to re-tool personnel packages and adjust things like our blitzes and coverages, but these things need to be tweaked if we expect to actually beat a Power 5 team here in the near future. He might also want to examine who he can/will fire the living F out of in the off-season.
Anyway, tune in for my article tomorrow, Why Bubba Baxa Should Be Turned Over To ISIS, sponsored by CanesWear.
