PRESEASON: FRIDAY 23 JAN 26

Today marked the official start of the preseason. Over the next three weeks, the team will prepare for opening day on Friday, Feb. 13, against Lehigh. Unfortunately, the day began with setbacks due to field limitations. The infield, affected by this week's rains, was not ready for play, possibly because it was not covered. As a result, only the catcher, pitcher, and batter participated in today's scrimmage, as was the case last week. The outfield remained playable, and it is hoped that by tomorrow, the grounds crew will have the infield ready for game activity.
Due to the absence of an infield, I made my best effort to assess whether balls hit in this area should be counted as hits or outs. I appreciate your understanding if I mistakenly called an out that should have been a hit. The primary goal of today’s practice was for the pitchers to get valuable repetitions while pitching to a batter. I realize this wasn’t the best scenario for the batters, who were limited to working on their timing and swing without any base-running or fielding activities.

Today's scrimmage was an enjoyable 7-inning matchup that showcased 8 pitchers, each taking the mound for 2 innings, with a few minor adjustments here and there. AJ Ciscar started strong, fanning 4 batters and giving up just one hit in both innings. On the opposing side, Tate DeRias, pitching against AJ, ended up going an extra inning. He had a challenging first inning, giving up a single to Michael Torres and hitting Derek Williams, but he regrouped well, striking out the next two batters. The second inning went much more smoothly, with Tate retiring the side in order. Just when it seemed like everything was under control, Gabriel Milano stepped up and crushed the only home run of the day into right-center, adding some excitement to the game!

Jack Durso and Dylan Dubovik took the mound next, showcasing their pitching skills. Jack faced a scare early when he allowed a double to Alonzo Alvarez, but he quickly found his groove and held off any potential scoring from there. On the other hand, Dylan struggled with control, loading the bases in his second inning but managed to strike out Brandon DeGoti to escape the jam. Although Dylan had a tough outing at the plate, striking out in all three of his appearances, it raises questions about how JD will utilize him this season. Will he be used primarily as a relief pitcher or take on a role as a pinch hitter?

Brixton Lofgren, a player we didn't see much of last season and only caught a glimpse of late in the year, really made an impression this time around by striking out the first two batters he faced. JD is taking a careful approach, so he only let him pitch one inning for now, gradually easing him into the rotation as a mid-reliever.
In the final moments of the game, we had the chance to witness the two top candidates for setup and closer roles—***** Bradley-Cooney and

Ryan Bilka. Both players showcased their skills impressively. Despite ***** allowing a one-out double to Fabio, he bounced back well, striking out three batters to finish his two innings strong. Meanwhile, Ryan faced just one baserunner, issuing a walk but handling the situation with poise. Overall, it was a solid performance from both pitchers.
Offensively, it’s tough to give a thorough report since the batters hardly reached beyond home plate. I had to rely on my own judgment to distinguish between hits and outs. The standout performance came from Alonzo Alverez, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a walk, and one of his hits was definitely a clear double. Fabio Peralta also contributed with a double, and Gabriel Milano hit a home run to right center, marking the only other extra-base hits. Unfortunately, the strikeouts were once again too high, totaling 20, which is unacceptable.
Just a reminder that we’re set to start tomorrow at noon. Fingers crossed the field will be in good shape for us to play!

Pitchers today: Evans (3), Collera (3), Lodgek (2), Fernandez (2)

Evans was sharp and Fernandez was much better than the fall. Bats don’t seem to have hit their stride yet, and pickoff attempts to first could use some work.

PRESEASON: SAT 24 JAN 26

Field conditions have returned to normal, pushing today's start from noon to 1 p.m. A roller was used to smooth the infield, and it was worth the wait: we were able to watch five innings of actual baseball. Pitching picked up where it left off yesterday, dominating the hitters. Offensively, the team remained cold, managing only six singles and crossing the plate twice, initiated by the failed P/O attempt. The defense's main issue was a pickoff to first base, which allowed the runner to advance to third. Fabio Peralta led the hits today with multiple, ending a difficult preseason fall and showing he's returning to form from last year. The rest of the lineup remains quiet at the plate. Notably, Jailen Watkins, Cian Copeland, and Daniel Covet failed to record a plate appearance. Daniel did play third base defensively.

Rob Evans and Lazaro Collera each pitched three innings at today’s scrimmage. Rob is competing for a spot in the weekend rotation. By the third inning, Rob was in top form, striking out Michael Torres, Brandon DeGoti, and Derek Williams in succession. In contrast, Lazaro faced difficulties in the third inning, yielding three consecutive singles by Fabio, Max Galvin, and Brylan West, along with a failed pickoff attempt from catcher to first base, which resulted in one run. A sacrifice fly by Alonzo Alvarez brought in a second run for the offense. These were the only runs scored today.

Michael Fernandez and Jake Lodgek finished their scrimmage today. Michael has been working to improve after a difficult fall, during which he struggled considerably. He was likely among the top contenders for walks previously, but today revealed a different side of himself. He did record one walk, but his main issue was a misfire on a pickoff attempt to first base. Like Lorenzo, his throw was off target. A skilled first baseman might have been able to field it, but defensively, first base isn't our strongest position. The infield has faced challenges due to field conditions, and with more repetitions, those throwing errors should decrease. In both of Michael's two innings, he encountered errors—one on his own throw to first and another involving his shortstop, Vance Sheahan. Thanks to the strong arm of the CF, uncertain whether it was Torres or Peralta, Sheahan was doubled up at home, preventing a run. Lodgek completed his two innings smoothly, only issuing a walk to Dylan Dubovik.

Offensively, the performance was underwhelming. The solution involves spending more time in the batting cage or working to eliminate the rust from the two-month layoff. They have three weeks to regain their timing before their plate appearances begin to count. Our pitching is solid, but not at a level where the offense should be struggling at the plate. Strikeouts were significantly reduced to twelve today, yet they remain too high. With only six hits and Fabio being the only player with multiple hits, today's performance leaves much to be desired. As previously mentioned, Watkins, Cuvet, and Copeland failed to make a plate appearance.

Initially, our defensive weaknesses are evident. I haven't been particularly impressed with Brylan West's defense at first base; he seems somewhat lazy and uncomfortable there. The same applies to Donavan Jeffrey. Based on my observations, Cian Copeland has shown the most promise, but since West has more experience, JD will start him. The situation with our catcher is similar, though less apparent. Alex Sosa will get the starting role over Alonzo Alvarez, who has outperformed Sosa both defensively and at the plate. Ideally, JD should split their playing time evenly rather than favoring one over the other. A decision on the middle infield is still pending. My preference is for Jake at shortstop, given his throwing arm and familiarity with the position from last year, and Vance at second base.
Tomorrow, we wrap up week one of the preseason with a scheduled start time of noon again, but it may be delayed if they decide to continue working on the infield
