When endured the Onofrio years ( " D" deliberately removed) when I and others would complain about our woeful defense some fans and media would defend it by claiming " so you think its as easy to fix as running a 4-3?" or " do you think you would do a better job"?
To which I would answer an emphatic YES to both.
We have gone from defenses ranked # 70-90 to, this year, basically 1-4 in every significant category. A MAJOR reason is Diaz' 4-3 and more aggressive scheme.
Obviously in every sport its the player who makes or doesn't make the plays. But the scheme is a factor too. So when apologist argue we have a subpar O line, I reply by saying its the COACHES job to minimize the risks posed by a bad o line, or qb, with a scheme design. Is anyone claiming UCF's o line is filled with all americans? Your job as a coach is to run plays where your line doesn't have to hold their blocks as long, where your qb has quick, easy reads.
Ive watched a lot of football and essentially coaches come in 2 types: one type makes the player fit his scheme come **** or high water; the other type ADAPTS his scheme to his players. Don Shula would be in the latter category . Richt appears to be in the former , which is nice, IF your talent fits your scheme. Never mind that part of his job is to acquire that talent, but the point is that anyone who says that the scheme is not a big part of a team performance on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays doesn't know enough about this game. You may not scheme your way to the NC, but you sure as **** at Miami should be able to scheme wins over BC, UVA and Duke.
