Week 12 college 'Footballpalooza' is in the books. Another great Saturday at the Coach JB Touchdown Lounge and Cigar Bar. Former Tulane great (and Super Bowl winner) Shaun King was in the house, as was Darnell Smith (yes, he showed up!!). A good time was had by all. Some thoughts on what I saw...
- Both Dabo and Brohm tried to give this game away on Friday night, but at the end it was L'Ville just imploding with penalties and errant kicking. As you see the Tigers, this is a squad that has NFL talent all over. How did the manage to lose 5 games?
- ND just overwhelmed and dominated Pitt upfront -- and really everywhere else. Starting with Jeremiyah Love's long TD jaunt and then a pick 6 shortly thereafter, the Panthers never truly felt in this game. Mason Heintschel was surrounded and swarmed all game long. The Irish did an excellent job of containing him
- Marcel Reed was just absolutely horrendous in the first half. He seemed to hit more South Carolina defensive backs with his passes than his own receivers. It gave me Vinny Testaverde in the 87 Fiesta Bowl vibes. He actually could have had a couple more INT's But he led the Aggies back from 30-3 with an incredible second half. Every big throw and run that was needed, Reed made in the second half. It was a remarkable in-game turnaround.
It was the exact opposite for the Gamecocks, who couldn't sustain their momentum. LeNorris Sellers is an incredible athlete but he really is an unrefined QB. He simply misses too many layups and for all this athleticism does not have great pocket awareness. Those sacks he took late in the game were egregious.
- Great win for the Sooners on the road. Their defense -- even without R Mason Thomas -- came up big with INT's, pick 6's and just making life difficult for Ty Simpson, overall. OU won despite getting out-gained 326 to 138. Ryan Williams had a key punt return fumble. I just haven't been a fan of his overall play in his sophomore season
- Kirby Smart might be doing his best job of coaching this season. Like last week, once again, he made some key decisions that really aided his team. His Georgia squad was battling Texas, it was 14-10 UGA, and he makes the decision to go for it on his side of the field on 4th and 1. They end up scoring a TD. Then after that... he calls for an onside kick that the 'Dogs recover. They score again.
UGA runs away with this game 35-10. Once again, Gunner Stockton was very good (24 for 29. 229, 4 TD's0.
- GaTech had to rally late to beat BC. Haynes King, as usual, had a bit statistical day (371 yards passing, 53 rushing) and he was clutch late leading the Jackets to a last minute game winning FG. He should absolutely be in the thick of the Heisman race. Brent Key and his squad keep finding way to win (9-1) but they should be concerned that their defense is leaking a lot of oil in recent weeks.
- Week in and week out, Texas Tech just keeps hammering teams. This time it was UCF they squashed by a score of 48-9. I think this is a team that wont just make the playoffs, but be a factor in it.
- Some might downplay it, but USC had a gut check win on a rain soaked Coliseum field vs the always difficult Iowa squad. The Trojans scored the last 16 points in the second half to win 26-21 to stay in the playoff race. Bottom line, they don't win a game of this nature last season.
- Navy sunk USF's playoff chances. The Bulls just couldn't come up with enough defensive stops in Annapolis giving up 524 yards, while gaining 556 themselves.
- Anyone notice that Wake Forest is now 7-3 in Jake ****ert's first season? He's done a great job and the Deacs down UNC 28-12. Keep this in mind, they were absolutely robbed against GaTech earlier this season.
- Has any player been as consistently good as Fernando Mendoza? He was 22 for 24, 299 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Hoosiers just methodically pulled away from Wisconsin, 31-7.
