Shelton Henderson is One and Done

His jump shot is the only reason why I think he comes back for a sophomore year.
I want to make sure I say this the right way. In no one way, shape or form has he been a disappointment. He is having a very good freshman season. He is doing a lot of things well. I have no regrets.
His jump shot was the only weakness I saw in his game early in the season and it has improved over the past 15 games.
Unfortunately, it's not on the level where I feel comfortable that he can turn pro and have a successful decade long career in the NBA.
That is not to be mean nor disrespectful in any way, its just an objective view to the situation.
I think you are 100% correct. I love his game and contribution. I think he is our best defender and plays well beyond his age. He is obviously a great finisher and has improved his shots within 10 feet of the basket. But I thought his jump shot would have improved at this point in the season. Because without it he’s too easy to guard in the NBA, where he likely plays SF. And if you think about NBA small forwards, they are really good 3 point shooters.

Selfishly this works out well for UM because if Henderson returns, along with both Allens and the incoming recruits, UM has a bright future.

Perhaps we can get a Mississippi judge to rule on an extra year for Reneau and Donaldson. ****, throw Udeh in there too. Nothing makes me happier than seeing Udeh slam down a lob pass.

Someone should get Bruce Brown to talk to him about staying for a second year.
Bruce Brown played two years in college and went early-ish second round. I'm not even seeing Henderson on Top 100 big boards, let alone projected to get drafted at all. Standard G-League Salary is around $40k per year. He could make 10-15x that if he came back for another year at Miami and he's likely a sure-fire first rounder next year if he continues on the trajectory he's on.

I don't think it should be up for debate.

He can greatly improve defensively also.

We are as much fun, and as entertaining to watch as any team in college basketball. The other team I would include in this (yes I am biased) is Michigan because of the same reason, they hunt for lobs to their bigs. And both teams have athletic bigs who can go and get the ball over the rim.
Udeh maybe the best lob finisher in basketball. Anything that is within 5 feet of the basket has lob potential. I loved when he called for Allen to throw him the lob on the 3 on 1 break against UNC. It was almost like Udeh was afraid Allen may throw it up to Henderson instead. It’s like a race to the rim.

His ability to make jump shots and to create his own shot is the difference between his floor and his ceiling.
His floor is Tony Allen , Bruce Bowen or Marcus Smart especially if he can only make corner jump shots.
His ceiling is Kawhi Leonard if he can make the 3 point shot along with creating his own jump shots particularly off one or two dribbles.

His “floor” is absolutely not two of the best perimeter defenders the NBA has seen the past 2 decades lol cmon now

If Henderson leaves, he won’t be on an NBA roster opening day next season. He’s a great athlete but he’s not a good enough shooter or overall scorer. The NBA is littered with guys his size and strength that are light years more skilled than he is. He’s a good defender but let’s not over analyze what he did against Caleb Wilson. Wilson isn’t strong enough yet to do what he’s doing in college, in the pros. He will be a good pro, but he’s got a ton of work to do.

Henderson should absolutely come back and be the cornerstone of this team next year.
