I don't think, coming out of H.S., Maryland had any big offers other than Miami. Probably not a top 300 recruit, let alone top 100.

Yet left number one overall in the draft and two nattys, only to score 3 super bowls after. A 'canes legend that's easily forgotten

My point was that H.S. rankings sometimes aren't the end-all be-all. Sure, on average, you'd rather get the higher-rated recruit. But there are so many kids out there that the "experts" aren't going to spot everyone. And once in a while a kid that isn't that great at 17 years old turns into a beast at 20 y.o.

Also, we really need some beasts on the DL. It seems out best teams have always had a dominant DT - Brown, Kennedy, Maryland, Sapp, Wilfolk. Who's next?

I know it's due to the age difference, but people dont realize how bad *** Russell was.

There's a reason he was the #1 pick in the NFL Draft, by none other than the great Jimmy Johnson. We all know Jimmy knew talent and he took him #1 overall.
