running and short yardage fix

We can’t keep trying to run the ball out of shotgun in short-yardage situations. When the defense knows we’re running, giving the back the ball 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage puts us at a disadvantage.

Shotgun runs give defenders more time to collapse gaps and key on the back’s path. In short-yardage, that horizontal step before going downhill costs momentum.

The I-formation fixes this. It gives the running back momentum, allows for a lead blocker, and forces the defense to respect multiple play options. For 3rd-and-short or goal-line situations, lining up under center is a much higher percentage call.

Just out of curiosity...how far back from the LOS do you think the tailback is in the I-formation?

Something I didn't see enough was play action passes.

If you're committing THAT MUCH to the run, play action will keep the defense from cheating too much.

Personally, I don't mind old school running between the tackles. But give yourself tools to make it work.

This!!! I was waiting on playaction and throw to a TE. It never came.

It’s like we played a vanilla script which is wild to think.

How well did Beck sell a play action at UGA?

I have seen QBs that make it far too obvious when trying to sell a PA and it doesn’t fool the defense. Maybe Miami knew ND would easily sniff out a PA? I’m not saying this is the case but I am genuinely curious as to how well Beck hides the PA.

ND has one of the best DL in the country. Our running game is fine
Im Not No Way GIF

They definitely do not. Secondary, absolutely. Might be the best in the country. DL, barely top 25

Strongly disagree that runs out of shotgun are any easier to diagnose. Linemen are always read keys for defenders no matter the formation. Also employing a FB as a lead blocker is another key to lead linebackers to the ball. Some of this function is accomplished by wing/H-backs or motioning receivers into this position. We’ll likely see more RPO tags off inside/split zone as a counter to any +1 defenders.

I disagree with your take on their DL. I do think our run game will be fine, given our OL. But I do expect more out of our run game, given our OL. We need big chunk plays more often.

Not sure. I watched a lot of Georgia games but not in that detail at the time to see what Beck did well or not.

The positive is Miami got the win and some good tape to review. All these guys on offense still getting used to each other since Beck was out in the spring.

last year everytime we did I formation with Cam it was a cake walk

we can use loften as the full back and from there we can do SOOO much more, play action, maybe give to loften, or let him lead the way. nobody would stop us ever.

How I long to see us stretch the field and run outside on short yardage, making them have to catch us.
Dare I say kinda like FSU did Bama.

Im going to print this off and hand deliver it to Mario ASAP.

Its not changing man. As much as we all know that a slightly diversified run game would help, its not going to change.

We did an outside run once yesterday and it worked. Thats about the average per-game.

What if we direct snapped to Baby Jesus in shotgun on 3rd and short though
