They hate was always overstated by our fanbase, **** near every media person has always said cfb is better when we are good. They are quick to try and hype anytime us we have shown any glimpse of being good
I think our fans were so use to the coverage our glory days had and couldn’t handle them talking about us like a regular mediocre football program that we have been for almost 20 years
Yeah, there is some serious media PTSD in here.
It all ebbs and flows based on how long a team has been winning and if they are on the decline.
Early '80's Miami - media darling. Coach with the scruffy moustache and a pipe calling offensive football like the kind played on Sundays. Exciting young team unexpectedly beating bluebloods (Penn State, Notre Dame, & Nebraska), but doing it the "right" way with respect.
Mid- '80's to '91 Miami - media disdain, but with respect. Clobbering of bluebloods now deemed "disrespectful" (Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas, etc.). Still the respect is there because the team still wins, and wins A LOT. Any misstep that occurs is highlighted and reveled in by the media - '86 Fiesta Bowl (probably deserved that one), '88 ND Catholics vs. Convicts, '90 BYU.
'92 Miami - '97 Miami - total media disdain and disrespect. Bravado without backing it up is just viewed as punk behavior and embarrassing on the national stage.
Rinse and repeat for the rise and fall again of Miami between '99 and '04. Now, with 20 years of mediocrity, no one cares. They're just hoping for the band to get back together and go on a reunion tour. It looked like 2017 was that year, but no. Hopefully 2024 is the year for the resurrection.
