Report: Maryland, seeking new football coach, hires search firm

Search firms are like temp agency. They have no allegiance to the program. They have zero pulse on the heartbeat of a program. They will send you someone from the losers’ pool and sell it to you like they are sending you the next JJ. They are a waste of money, time and effort. It is best to do your own homework, it’s not very hard.

I think universities use search firms to hide the paper-trail and to give third-party validation to the search. It avoids the appearance of "good ole boy" networking.

But with the way sports media and agents works these days, the stuff gets out anyway.

And, to your point ... EVERYONE knows the legit names that will be in the mix.

Was it Miami who hired a search firm, and the guy in charge of searching applied for the job?

1000% inaccurate. Search firms exist so that a coach can "contact" a school without really contacting the school. They don't go out and do the search for you. Good lord. They make those contacts that you're not allowed to make and then they tell you who is realistic and who isn't.

PLEASE DON'T TAKE RICHT. HE HAS DONE AN AMAZING JOB OF TURNING THIS PROGRAM AROUND AFTER A PERIOD OF CONTROVERSY AND IS THE NOBLEST OF STEWARDS FOR OUR BRAND.

While your point makes sense, and may be right, how did AG appear on tha admin’s radar? It was him and Randy Edsall, who ended up at Maryland, presented to the admin as potential candidates, both losers. Just asking.

Al Golden wasn't a loser at the time. Al Golden was one of those "imagine what he would do with our athletes" guys after taking Temple from 1-11 to 9-4 and a bowl game.

Randy Edsall was getting a lot of hype from building UCONN from 1-AA to D-1 and Golden was doing the same at Temple. Remember Temple was thrown out of the Big East for being so horrible.
Yes, I do. But I also remember the search firm presented theses two clowns as available options to the admin. The fact that the admin failed to do its own due diligence (Shabaka included), is secondary, but that is what the search firm came up with. My point is, if that is all the search firms do, who needs them? Anyone in the alumni can do this crap. There must be more than just identifying who’s available.

Hold on. You're saying "anyone in the alumni" can gauge the interest of a coach who is currently under contract with another school?

Did you ever think that all of the coaches you want to come here said "no thanks"?
