Time for a look at who's left and what they did in week 1.
FAMU - lost to SC State 31-13. Gained only 161 yards and gave up 479. FAMU is not what they were among the top MEAC teams. They used to have at least have some athletes to make us work a little. This is barely a scrimmage and more like a walk through. Our scout team would make this a game. I can only assume we'll sit anyone who isn't 100%. Poor FAMU gets a whole 4 days rest before having to face us. Tough gig.
Wake Forest - Beat Akron 38-16. Rolled up a bunch of yards behind UNC flameout Gio Lopez. Akron is an FBS bottom feeder but Lopez is an athletic QB that has traditionally given us some problems. Even Akron moved the ball on them and was 28 of 33 passing and could run on them though. I don't see a universe where they outscore us even if our defense comes out sleepwalking.
Central Michigan - Blown out by New Mexico 38-7. Held to under 150 yards offense. I don't think this one is gonna be as close as the 2019 near-debacle when McShark****er had them playing competitively. MAC bottom feeder. It's a little unsettling how bad our early schedule is. Finally facing a good team is gonna be whiplash.
Clemson - Violated and disemboweled by LSU 51-10. And I'm not sure if was even as close as the score indicated. Clemson will improve, and they'll pack Death Valley. It'll be their Super Bowl because we always are. But if we had Dabo's number in 2023 with Emory Williams and when they actually had a QB you have to like our chaces. Stop the run and we're in good shape I think.
Florida State - Beat NM St 34-17 and lost to SMU 27-24 in a game SMU desperately tried to give them. Who's gonna be coaching FSU for this game? Who knows. This one is at The Rock and will be packed and I think we'll be ****ed off. But like 2024, wouldn't shock me if it's a comfortable win but not a total blowout. Why? Say it with me. This will be their Super Bowl. And they might have an interim coach bump.
Pitt - Beat Miami of Ohio 59-14. Pitt is dangerous. Even though their QB didn't do much against us last year, he's very good. I'm glad this game is at The Rock. This is one of those that has landmine written all over it. I think it's a dogfight or we coast. I'll be more concerned if our secondary is banged up. This low key might be the 2nd toughest game on the schedule.
UNC - Beat TCU 15-10. They're improved but they're a God **** mess. They have an unfolding scandal, several in fact. I don't remember the last time we won at Chapel Hill. 2017? God I really want to paste these fools. TCU has really declined so it's hard to gauge just how much the Heels have improved but they went heavy in the portal and have some weapons. This one could be interesting. I hope it isn't.
Notre Dame - Beat Wisconsin 41-13. They didn't exactly light the world on fire offensively. In fact it was surprisingly close yardage-wise. And while Wisky showed a pulse in the first half, they're still cheeks, and will be lucky to win 5 this year. Don't get it twisted though, ND is loaded. Maybe Carr isn't the second coming but he's solid and can beat you as a game manager. They are good on each line. Good in the secondary. Have very good if not great skill guys on offense. They are bent on revenge, doubly so because of the loss and missing the playoffs. This will be their Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, World Cup, and Soap Box Derby Championship all rolled into one. They'll be favored if everything unfolds as expected. I expect this to be an '88-style dogfight.
Duke - Beat Tulane 17-3. The fighting Mannys managed 77 plays but averaged under 5 yards per play. Their QB looked very pedestrian and they won with ball control. The magic is gone, because we literally stole it. I don't think Mensah and Coop will have a soft spot for their former team. Hard to imagine this one is close.
VT - Smoked VMI 73-3. We learned nothing from this game as VMI is one of the worst D1 teams around and got smoked the week prior by Idaho State. We'll learn a bit more after they play Old Dominion. I have no idea what Franklin's first year will look like but I'm sure it's an improved product. Franklin gets a lot of **** but he's a good coach.. to a point. Enough to pull an upset over a highly ranked team if we're not careful.
BC - Lost to Cincinnati 34-15. Weird game. They actually outgained Cincy and held them to 85 passing yards and still got crushed. A lot of that was because Cincy ran all over them and controlled the ball. Also forced 2 turnovers. BC looks like cheeks again, and Luke Keuchly isn't walking through that door. We should take care of business late in the season.
Not a lot of surprises after week 1 besides FSU being competitive. This still shakes out to how I saw it prior. Clemson could be tough, Pitt will be, and ND is "the game." Every game is very winnable.
