I hate sometimes that we have to convince a big time small town recruit’s parents that miami is actually coral gables and they’ll be safe and secure here, yet these SFla divas have no problem going to small *** Tallahassee, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Oxford, Athens, Gainesville or any other small country college town.

Occasionally this will work in our favor, like with Brevin Jordan who is from a big city environment but other than dirty bags I don’t know why a urban SFla kid would easily go live in the boonies.

Its a double edged sword. I think we have a clear advantage in that our backyard is the most fertile recruiting ground in the entire country. However, you only get one college experience. The U has what 10,000 undergrads, a bunch of commuters from NJ/ NYC? The city of Miami is huge. You go to an SEC school and its 30,000 college kids all hanging out in their one small town. Everyone knows everybody. If you're on the football team you're shooting fish in a barrel on the weekends. A lot of the miami kids want to get out and experience college. I hate that they do it but that's reality.
I think Richt has done a great job though in showing what Miami can be when our local talent stays home and puts on. If we continue to win we will continue to stockpile the local talent.

Double edge sword you win some and lose some. I think that having Richt for situations like that is a HUGE advantage. Parents trust him and that trust can sometimes help them get over their fear of "big cities".

It's not always that. It's the big fish small pond. Going to Athens, Gainesville, Tally, Tuscaloosa, etc. you are the celebrity there. Those towns revolve around those schools. Not Miami. Yea when Miami is winning the buzz in the city picks up. It's constant in those places. Kids love to feel the love and those small towns you are the only show in town most of the time.

The adjustment that the kid has to be capable of making is not to be overlooked. Some people have a hard time adjusting to traffic and noise and constant activity. I went to school in Miami after growing up in a small town in Mississippi. I loved the city, but I know there are plenty of people I grew up with that can't stomach the thought of living in the slightly larger small town across the bridge. If that's going to be an issue for them, then they absolutely shouldn't come to Miami. I look at it the same way that we often look at competition. If you don't want to compete for your position, don't come here. If you're afraid of "big city livin", don't come here.

i laughed at your post while nodding my head because many of these parents wouldn’t hesitate to send their kids to an Ivy League school or another 2 dozen great schools in the north/northeast, or GA Tech or Vandy; schools with far worse neighborhoods/campus crime than Coral Gables.

Austin, TX and Columbus, OH may sound like a college town for the average geography-challenged parent, but they’re cities with city problems.

Lots of dynamics in play here locally. 3 top schools with many grads and fans from the 2 state schools. More schools recruit here than they do all the other states. Some have no sense of community and not all are hard core Miami like they are in Georgia and alabaga. Winning and the interaction with local youth programs will start paying dividens.

Why would kids care about being in a college town where they are surrounded by 30k-40k other kids their same age? They don’t care much about what’s outside the college area for the most part. These college towns have plenty of parties for them to go to.

Richt is making a strong impact, but he understands better than anyone regarding what he is competing with. We are in an "Arms Race" for facilities and other bells and whistles. It's not the size of the town, it's more about the support, tinker-toys and fanaticism.

Our selling points are National Championship tradition, top flight education, paradise Mecca, NFL connections, ect. We must also get back to finding the players that are hungry and talented! Look for the guys that feel they have something to prove.

Not an easy task, but it can be done.

This is right on! Plenty of prestigious schools are in or near bad neighborhoods such as USC, UCLA, George Washington. Also Harvard , Penn State, Michigan, Virginia, USC, Cal are all in the top 10 of worst campus crime rates

UCLA, Michigan, and UVA gotta go ahead and disagree.

People don't know this but Yale is straight up in the hood. That part of New Haven is no joke, for real, actually dangerous. Gun Wavin New Haven. If you're inclined to do wrong you can find ample outlet in the neighborhoods around Yale and UPenn. But those bustas get a pass. Johns Hopkins is another where you can get set up in the dope game.

But somehow we're supposed to believe that Coral Gables is too rough for some of these jits.

I dont know how a kid from the city can go to the boon docks..............I wont even lie str8 up I need noise from outside to sleep I cant leave cause the quiet annoys the fuq outta me. When I go visit family and they leave in some quiet area I got to have my phone on with some sort of noise to sleep if not I cant sleep cause I know those boonies got UFOs

parents have watched the 30 for 30s too much and think that is how it is. having game day on our campus for the ND was really nice. some of my friends had their eyes opened. they think our campus is like a huge college town. id say 75% of the people I know think Miami is a public school and they are dumbfounded when i tell them we have less than 15k undergraduates.
