Ranking college football's coaches 1 to 128 | Sporting News

13. Mark Richt, Miami (Fla.)

Last Year: 26
Record: 0-0 (145-51)
Lowdown: After 15 years at Georgia, Richt returns to his alma mater, and it’s a great fit from the start. Expect Richt to work wonders with NFL prospect Brad Kaaya at quarterback. Expectations are always high at “The U.” but no higher than the pressure Richt faced with the Bulldogs. This is going to work!!

Should Richt be listed higher?

Coaches like , Oregon's Helfrich, Notre Dame's Kelly, or even TCU" s Patterson are all good coaches but better than Richt?

Richt has said it himself he lost a little bit of the Fire the last few years being more of a CEO than a Coach, but hopefully he'll find that fire again now that he's taking a more active role, calling plays & working with the QB's...

Next year when the list comes out hopefully Richt will move up in to the top 10

Patterson may be as good as it gets. Helfrich for sure shouldn't be higher than Richt, Kelly is a toss up.

Are they going to release a Part 2 for coaches 129 and below? Interested in what they think about Golden.

There's only 128 FBS teams.

I think 13 is a reasonably fair ranking for Richt. His Georgia teams had slipped in recent years and whether or not that was all his fault doesn't matter because results are what people care about. I'd personally put him in the top 10 but he's got time to raise his profile. If he can win big here, he'll be back among the elite again.

Mark Helfrich is Larry Coker, Tubby Smith or the NFL Barry Switzer (not OU Switzer.)

Except, wait a second, those other 3 people actually won a championship. And Helfrich didn't.

Brian Kelly is the most overrated CFB coach I have ever seen. He is 55-23 at the dome. If Richt were to go 55-23 in 6 years here I'd be more than ready to fire him.

I didn't realize anybody regarded Helfrich very highly until I read this article. And how is Strong still ranked in the top 30 after how awful he's done at Texas? I don't even think he belongs in the top 50. Helton at USC is almost universally regarded as a joke hire and should be in the bottom 5 in the whole country.

I actually might rank Gundy ahead of Richt though. He seems to be underrated.

Cutcliffe at Duke is underrated as well. He's ranked at about the same spot as Strong. So a guy who's lead Duke to 4 or 5 straight bowl games is no better than a guy who's lead Texas to 2 straight losing seasons? I don't think that even Spurrier had as good of a record at Duke as Cutcliffe's had.

Butch Jones at Tennessee at #25 . Oh God. A guy who's 21-17 at a storied program who keeps getting credit because he's trending upward through 3 years. Where does this seem familiar from? It's similiar to a story I've heard twice before but I forget the names of the coaches. I know I once heard of a different coach who was exactly 21-17 through 3 years just like Butch Jones. Much like Jones, this coach got credit for trending upward and going 9-4 in year 3. I also heard about a different coach who was a bit better (22-15) through 3 years, and similiarly got a lot of credit for trending upward and getting to 9-4. Can somebody please remind me of what the names of these 2 coaches were?
