Proud of the players for playing hard & winning on Sr Day. We could have boatraced VT if the coaches hadn't become conservative (particularly when they ran out the clock to end the first half). Should have simply kept the pedal to the metal.

Yes, there are talent deficiencies on the team (particularly at DE & LB) but you can also see glimpses of the true potential of the Canes when the right guys get PT & the right plays are called.

Random observations:

TVD: could easily have had over 400 yards without all of the drops, PI by VT's DBs & conservative playcalling. Stud.

Rambo: Putting together one of the best seasons ever by a Canes WR...and that's after a fairly pedestrian start. Fun to watch him do his thing.

Franklin: Has tremendous potential. Could be an absolute beast for us. Lashlee's offense has been scoring at a fast pace since TVD's emergence, but there's a few areas Lash should be criticized in & one of them is using a single bellcow RB (Knighton currently) for the vast majority of the game...even when the conditions really didn't fit Knighton's running style & it was starting to look like Rooster was about to get hurt. Franklin is a stud. He needs to get reps & be developed. He has incredible potential. Get him more PT (at least 30%-35% of the reps) & use him on short yardage runs. It's mind boggling that he hasn't been used more. He looked way more sure-footed than Knighton running today (given the wet conditions) and is far more capable of sustaining heavy punishment from opponents.

Harley: Had some nice catches today. Has ended up with a very solid career at Miami (after a fairly slow start).

Mallory: Glad he's woken up after a really slow start to the year. He's talented (although he still needs to dramatically improve his blocking). Very disappointing that his long TD was negated. That's a fun play & he had some serious YACs on that one.

B. Smith: That was a fun TD. Great to see him making an explosive play & getting involved.

Nesta: Consistently plays hard & with passion. Props to him for all of the effort plays he's made throughout the season (including tonight). He may not be the next Vince WIlfork or Cortez Kennedy but I do think he's pretty much maxed out his effort & attempted to realized his full potential (and he should be commended for that).

McLeod: Not quite LT with the Giants but the position move seems to have been great for him & I feel like he's applied more pressure to opposing QBs than any of our other DL this season. Great to see him finish his last home game on a high note.

Chase Smith: Looks promising. Would love to see him getting more PT. Has great physical tools (everything we've been missing at the LB position for most of the season).

Fewer Penalties: Way fewer penalties than against FSU (where we handed them the win in large part due to countless stupid penalties). Fewer penalties made a huge difference today.

Patke: Really? We let them recover an onside kick? That ain't the Miami standard & that block in the back also negated another big play. Special teams are costing us big time week after week. Between that & the LB play (and serious lack of quality LB recruiting), Patke is looking very much like one of the weakest links.

4th & 1: Use Franklin not Knighton for that situation. Do NOT go for it near your own 30 yard line (unless it's your last possession of a game & you're behind & have no choice but to try & score). Diaz was incredibly lucky that call went for Miami (it was a blown call as Knighton did not make it to the sticks) and it didn't change the outcome of the game....but that was seriously unwise.

This was a good win but that was a pretty poor Va Tech team. Compared to the stout VT team's under Beamer (with Michael Vick & nasty defenses & ST), this was a really weak VT squad. We should have gone full throttle on offense until the middle of the 4th quarter at least. We could easily have lost this game after we became conservative.
