I regret to inform you all that former Cane Dwayne Collins passed away yesterday from an apparent heart attack. He was only 36 years old. For those of you who knew him or ever had the opportunity to talk to him, knew he was a gentle giant. Mild mannered and soft spoken. Great young man. May he rest in peace. 🙏

This is incredibly sad news.

I went to UM around the same time Dwayne did. He was always super kind and humble to the students and fans. A true gentle giant as you said.

A reminder of how precious life is, and how suddenly it can end. RIP #21.

Loved Dwayne. He was actually drafted near the end of the second round, which is impressive (for Miami basketball).

I had a couple of classes with DC, dude was cool. He would go out of his way to say hi to people he recognized from the games, especially back when the student section was me, my little crew and like ten other people. I still remember him walking by, grabbing a folding chair(From where I'll never know) and hanging out at a party my friend threw, just because he heard us out in the alley talking hoops. He will be missed.
Awful news. This is happening to way too many young people.
Don't start this nonsense, because we know full well what you are getting at. DC was a big dude, and that was with him working out a ton while in school. I'm quite sure he gained weight once his career ended, which likely exacerbated issues that he was going to have anyway, due to his size. There's a reason people like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are medical marvels, it's rare for someone that big to live to see 75.

Eat a ****. There are plenty of normal sized people who this is happening to. And I have no idea what is causing it.

Not sure why you're lashing out at JG14 as what he said is a valid observation.

Actually smart guy he didn’t gain much weight, Maybe 5-10 pounds if that.. I’m his brother, blood. It’s the COVID shots in my honest opinion. 💔

It's almost certainly NOT the COVID shots.

One of my best friends from undergrad and law school passed away from a MINOR heart defect at around the same age (mid-30s). It hadn't been detected until just before he passed. His doctor saw something that he wanted to examine, but didn't think it was critical, so they made an appointment for him to come in for an exam in a couple of weeks. Before that could happen, he passed in his sleep.

I understand that people want to point to the "new thing" (like COVID shots) as a factor, but soooo many people pass from the types of issues that have been around for thousands of years. Particularly with athletes, since they seem to be in such great shape, doctors can overlook what may appear to be mild issues with the heart and its rhythms. Hank Gathers was a very well-known case.

All the best to your family, this is a heartbreaking tragedy. I've been a huge UM basketball fan since I first enrolled in 1986, and I really enjoyed watching that 2007-2008 team play. I saw James Dews at the Final Four a couple of years ago. Good times, good memories.

Take care, and all the best. Go Canes!
