Just a few nuggets - I was with a Top 50 QB yeterday from a Power 5 (in transfer portal) and 2 additional Top 25 QB recruits in 2025 and 2026. It's so interesting what has happened with NIL and the Portal for the QB position. The future of the postion at big Power 5 schools will be ever changing even if you get a top 25 guy yearly. Guys who get no playing time are looking to the FCS and lower schools to get that playing time to return back up to Power 5/Group of 5. A couple of guys are looking at the lower schools just so they can play and get reps versus sitting on the bench and praying the coach doesn't take the starter from the Portal so they can get a chance to compete. The new world with NIL and the big schools, winning now because of massive coaching contracts and wanting proven commodities at QB without taking chances on unproven commodities will be very interesting going forward. The Portal and offers for QBs is crazy too - you get an offer one minute and the next day it's pulled because they got a different kid. The QBs are in for a world of hurt with this new world and looking for opportunities.

I found this very interesting especially with Miami and Cam this year and what could be for next year as well and the future. I suspect you will see a lot of good players moving down ranks to get playing time only to return for that one year to make it back in Power 5.

paging @DMoney for his soapbox.

It’s an interesting model. You have (x) amount of NIL dollars to invest in quarterbacks. Do you go all in on a top high school quarterback that will potentially give you 1-2 years of top level play (allowing for development time)? Or do you use that money to get the vast available college free agent, who you would have for one year?

The latter leads to more turnover, but has a high likelihood of success in the short term. The former has a higher chance of failure - highly ranked high school quarterbacks have about as much of a success rate as NFL first round draft choices at that position.

It just makes more sense to take a QB who has proven at the college level that he can play over a HS kid who has all the physical tools but has done zero at the college level. I take the Portal guy every time.

I guess we are going to have to take a portal QB every year the way we recruit that position at the HS ranks.

Sounds like 1-2 year rental regardless of which direction you go… either you wait for HS kid to develop, with likely 2 years of playing or go the one year rental each year.

It’s not my money, but my sweet spot would be those that have played well early in their careers and have minimum 2 years left. I’d pay for elite one year rental or elite HS qb as well, but I’d try to stay close to that sweet spot.

What stops some of the smaller Div 1 and 2 schools from partnership with the mega schools as "g-league" teams... just share the wealth a bit.
