Press Man Coverage....

Sometimes we do line up in press man coverage and I get excited. Then, our CB's don't even try to jam the WR, but rather turn and run with the WR at the snap. Is there any sane explanation for this? Do any other teams line up in press man but not even attempt to jam the WR?

We do nothing to disrupt the timing of the routes. That's why horrid QB's like Logan Thomas, Chase Rettig, and Danny O'brien have career games against us. It's simple pitch and catch.

And yes, the D looked fine last night but it was FAMU.

Admittedly, I nodded off more than a few times during that game last night. I didn't notice the DB's bailing so much. I could be wrong. But I could have sworn that I saw 4 down defensive lineman moving toward the line of scrimmage LBs flowing and making plays. I didn't notice 3 three DL patty-cake too much. Encouraging.

Can't get too down on the DB's. When you are taught to be passive and then scolded for not buying into the "process" it takes a while to undo the damage.

The times I noticed it, Howard was 10 yards off the LOS, and the other corner was in press coverage.

Howard was in press plenty if times vs FAMU- torched repeatedly - the why don't we play SFl d crowd is clueless- Wanred to Howard but he is a lability after 3 years.

Howard is in trouble....if he was playing well he wouldn't be on special teams LATE in a game with the outcome already decided.

Howard gave up 2 big plays in press coverage....not sure dude man is that guy for it.

Before the season this is one of the MANY guys on this team I kept hearing will play on Sunday - we have a Stud MLB and a very good RB ---- there is not enough talent

Virtually every other player on this team - JAG

They sprint back because they're in thirds/quarters.

As for Howard, I'm still amazed at how people here think he's our best cover corner.

Despite the game last night, I think Gunter is better.

I just don't get the Howard thing... Everybody wants him to play press, but he got toasted twice. Plus, I think he is afraid to play bump and run. Maybe he's not fast enough to recover? Like someone said above, he was playing 5 yards off the WR. Don't know.

Gunther was right on the line. Gunther plays a much better man coverage...

I personally love the playing press, who else can run this for us? Burns? Crawford?

The technique there running is called bailing out. The corners comes down as if they are going to press then at the last second they bail out. What they are trying to do is disguise the coverage. Also bailing out its to show man then switch to zone which 9-10 times with No D is going to be quarters coverage and if you lbs are not showing blitz when the corners are up then it's not gone be effective and with the LBs covering the slots the middle will be wide open for slants and seem routes. What can be done is bringing in a nickel back and bringing the free safety down over the other slot, keep two lbs in the box, and have a safety over the top if your worrying about the run.

Again problem is team aren't going for the deep ball on us, they are throwing short intermediate routes. If that the case you need to press man and make the receivers earn those catches, but when your playing 10 yards off and the receivers are only running 5-10 yard routes your going to get torched. And if you DB's can't tackle, oh my your in for a long night. Take the VT vs OSU game last night, Bud Foster gave no ***** about OSU going deep. Freshmen Qb!? Oh we're not about to sit back and let him complete easy throws to build his confidence. His plan was your not going to nickel and dime us to death with short routes we going to get in those receivers face and get after them and it worked. Granted OSU completed some long td passes for tds, so what, VT had like 4 picks in the game. You play to win the game... That's a coach that does not coach passive and restrict his athletes. All he cares about is winning and if he gives us a td **** it, next play. Same thing when they played Bama, he didn't care about Mccarron and Cooper, he went toe to toe with Bama and gave them all they could handle.

Really interesting that people are judging Corners and not talking about how QB decisions are dictated. Anyone here ever played Corner at any level? It's ******* impossible unless you're dictating the timing of the offense. And, it's not just about a pass rush. It's about having synchronization between what the front is doing and what the coverage behind it intends to do. We do not have that. When we get spread out and our defenders get manipulated as the season progresses, we will see more of it.

This is another case of looking at results without context.

Gunter is the guy playing on Sundays. Don't even recall seeing Howard in second half. Also had assumed Mayes would redshirt.
