Vero Beach (Fla.) High School DE Patrick Bethel took his final official visit this weekend - an early graduate, he was in Miami and is now set to announce a decision at some point over the next few days.
Bethel's father, former Hurricane Randy Bethel, says he was with Patrick "the entire time." Asked if he thinks there's a decent shot for Patrick to choose UM, Randy said, "Obviously I think it's definitely way more than decent. I feel like he is a guy that weighs everything as a responsible young man. As I told him, `You don't go to school to play for me. Wherever you go is where I support you and love you.'
He adds, "I think he really seemed like he enjoyed this visit, the personnel, the guys that were on the trip with him, the other recruits already committed. Four of them committed (Shaq Quarterman, Mike Pinckney, Zach McCloud and Jack Allison). He really enjoyed those guys. That great camaraderie builds great teams."
The question then is posed to Randy: Would he say Miami's now the frontrunner for Patrick?
"I would have to say that," Randy said. "That's not reaching out too far just based on observing him, seeing how he was enjoying himself. The tours, practice we watched yesterday, I thought the visit was absolutely outstanding."
The family will huddle at some point later today to see if they can reach a final decision, although it may not be announced until during the week. Mom wasn't on the trip - she was attending the graduation of a favorite niece. Dad and son will fill her in and they'll weigh their options. There will be no more contact from colleges - Patrick hasn't signed early papers with any school, and the dead period is starting.
Along with UM the other finalists are Auburn and Tennessee.
"We really appreciate everyone's interest," Randy said. "I think the type of kid he is, he's ready to put this thing to bed pretty soon."
Certainly Patrick is unique in one respect when it comes to a top recruit - he's not an attention seeker. He could have announced at the Under Armour All-American game, but that's simply not his style.
"Putting on the hat at the game, he's not real big on that," Randy said. "He'll do something at the house with family. At that point we'll be done with it, notify the school and get ready to play football."
Randy envisions his son as a run-stopper who rushes the QB and also drops into coverage.
"(Coach Mark Richt), he said something right on point - `I don't want to put too much weight on him, but I don't want to starve him either,'" Randy said. "Pat is more of a hybrid player, plays comfortably either one. He has the ability to drop in coverage and can play the run from a 2-point or 3-point stance."
Randy said Richt and the entire staff "was great, just so informative."
"It was an outstanding visit," Randy said. "I feel great about the direction of the program.
"Coach Richt, I've been very impressed with him from the time he's gotten the job. His expectations for Miami Hurricanes football is where it needs to be. I think he understands where Miami's trying to go. He did an in-home visit with us last week that was great, really came in and made himself at home, had Patrick very relaxed around him in a very short period of time - we were eating cookies and milk, put our feet up, he made himself at home."
Something else about Richt that impressed Randy: The new coach did something unheard of in the past at UM - he told the hosts they had a curfew for returning the recruits to their hotel rooms at night.
"Usually they stay out till whenever," Randy said. "(Richt) was very adamant everyone's in by 1 o-clock. That's what he's done everywhere he's been. The kids bought into it right away, no issues with it. And I told him I really appreciated that. He said `I don't want them wandering around the streets at all hours.'"
CaneSport's take
We'd be very surprised if Bethel winds up anywhere but Miami. Look for him to announce his Cane commitment soon. And he'll be a tremendous addition to this class.
