*NOT* Just another thread about Kaaya and the OL from last Saturday.
Just his first 18 passing attempts.
First offensive series:
1st play - 1st&10, I form, Playaction, Sunny gets knocked on his ***, Kaaya is forced to leave the pocket, Coley is open downfield but Kaaya throws short to Walton, on the run, a little behind, could have been caught, but incomplete. Broken play, bad start. Camera man was having a ****.
2nd pass att - 1st&10, Shotgun, 3 wide, good protection, nobody open, Kaaya throws to Richards, incomplete in tight coverage. Nice play by the DB.
3rd att - 2nd&26, Shotgun, Darling tries to cut the DE but fails, Kaaya steps up in the pocket and throws a beautiful pass deep to Njoku for 46 yds.
4th att - 3rd&goal, I form, Playaction, Sunny gets beat again, Kaaya floats a pass to the back of the endzone intended for Njoku, incomplete.
5th att - 1st&10, Shotgun, 4 wide, Blitz from the nickle on Kaaya's right. Kaaya recognizes the blitz, throws quickly to that side for Coley who's running a skinny post from the slot, unfortunately he doesn't see the LB underneath who picks off the pass.
6th att - 2nd&11, I form, Playaction, good protection, Kaaya throws deep to Coley in man-to-man coverage. If it's a good throw, it's a touchdown. Bad throw, incomplete. Camera man with his thumb up his ***.
7th att - 3rd&11, Shotgun, 4 wide, good protection, Kaaya throws to Njoku running a slant wide open in the middle of the field. Easy first down...NOPE, Njoku drops it.
That's the end of the 1st quarter on offense. Kaaya is 1-7. One could argue that at least two of those passes (definitely the one dropped by Njoku, and probably the deep pass to Coley) should have been easy completions. One was a bad throw by Kaaya on a deep pass (which happens), the other was a straight up drop from a guy who's one of our biggest weapons on offense that ended a drive.
Two of the incomplete passes are on Sunny getting beat and Kaaya doing what he had to do to avoid a sack or a turnover.
The interception was clearly on Kaaya. The pass to Richards was a 50/50 deal. Nobody open, Richards maybe should have caught that.
So while he's 1-7 at this point, in reality, he's made only made one poor decision and one bad pass...while his supporting cast has let him down 3 or 4 times already in the 1st quarter.
On to the 2nd quarter:
8th att - 3rd&5, Shotgun, 3 wide, bubble screen to Yearby out of the backfield for a gain of 4. Three and out to start the 2nd quarter.
9th att - 1st&10, I form, 3 step drop, pass to Coley in man-to-man coverage, 13 yards, first down.
10th att - 1st&10, I form, Playaction, short drop, pass to Coley running a skinny post, too high, incomplete. This is a combination of a short drop (which is what CMR was talking about after the game) and a poor pass by Kaaya which was probably due to the fact that he had very little space to work with.
11th att - 2nd&10, I form, Playaction, good protection, flood to the short side of the field, Kaaya throws too high for Njoku on the sideline. It was a tight window but it's a pass that should've been completed IMO.
12th att - 3rd&10, Shotgun, 4 wide, Sunny appears to get beat to the inside but Kaaya had plenty of time to make a read and get rid of the ball, he leaves the pocket, rolls to his right and throws for Walton, incomplete. Truthfully, on this play Sunny had a good handle on his guy until Walton chips the **** out of him and knocks the guy towards the inside and into the pocket where Kaaya was standing.
13th att - 1st&10, Shotgun, 4 wide, bubble screen to Herndon. 20 yards. First down.
14th att - 1st&10, Same exact play to the opposite side of the field. Herndon gets down inside the 5. Terry Porter reappears and calls Malcolm Lewis with holding in the endzone. F*ck it all. 1st and 20 coming up.
15th att - 1st&20, I form, bubble screen for Richards. Nine yards. Some ******/Nigerian guy on FAU gets a cramp.
16th att - 2nd&11, Shotgun, 4 man rush, both Darling and Sunny give up way too much ground, pocket collapses, Kaaya steps up and throws to Njoku who's got a step on his man in the endzone, Njoku dives but can't catch the ball just out of reach.
17th att - 3rd&11, Shotgun, 4 wide, good protection, Kaaya throws to Richards in man-to-man coverage for the first down inside the 10.
18th att - 1st&10, I form, Playaction, Darling gets beat, Kaaya's arm is hit as he attempts to throw. #14 for FAU makes the play of his lifetime as the ball falls into his lap and he still almost c0cked it up. Interception leading to FAU's first points of the night.
Kaaya is 6-17, 35% (one pass called back via penalty) with two picks at this point. Disgusting, but the OL is about to get an A$$ chewing.
From this point on Kaaya completes 11 of his 14 passes, or 80%. He's 8 for 11 in the 3rd and doesn't throw a pass in the 4th.
From my point of view it's obvious that the OL needs to step it up in a big way as the level of competition increases to protect Kaaya...but we all knew that going into the season.
I think we need to look at what this team does well all this point. The running game appears to be pretty good. That includes the run blocking. If you really pay attention, the execution by the OL in the running game is much better than it was last year where we looked like we didn't know who to block.
We just don't have any tackles at this time who can go one on one with a stud DE...but again, we knew that.
Also, Njoku needs to get his head out of his ***. He's the biggest mismatch on the team and Kaaya looks to him to bail us out in tough situations.
Lastly, we lost two fumbles on Saturday. Well, we didn't because the replay booth was our friend...but we really did.
