Outsider perspective on UM search?

It's easy for us to get sucked into our Canes vortex. Most of us do see this whole hiring situation with our Orange & Green glasses on - and if you try to look at it objectively, you come across as a tool. Personally, the Cane in me loves the idea of Butch. If I think objectively, I think Herman might be the best choice. Whatever.

Butch, Herman, Strong, Chud, blah, blah, blah... There are Canes fans who can make a strong case for any of them, and understandably so.

However, over the last few weeks, I have talked about this hire with pretty much anyone willing to listen to me (as many of you probably have) - most of them NOT Miami fans who love the fact that we're limping along. I have found the consensus somewhat interesting...

They DO NOT WANT Miami to hire Butch. Even if there's a chance his best days have passed him by, they fear the fact that he has "figured out" UM and knows what makes it tick. They do not see him failing here, even if he doesn't recreate the 2001 team.

They DON'T CARE if UM hires Charlie Strong. Sure, he's got ties to South Florida, and would recruit well, but doesn't really intimidate them as a coach. Same seems to go for Cristobal. They're a little more concerned about the potential recruiting dynasty he could create down here, but are convinced that doesn't necessarily translate to the field.

They DON'T CARE about Pagano - they don't know too much about him and if he'd translate well to the college game again. Similar sentiments with Chud.

They DO SEEM CONCERNED about the possibility of Schiano. They think he would recruit well and certainly develop a hard-nosed, SEC style team.

They WOULD PREFER that UM hire Herman or Fuente. There is a higher probability that they might flounder at UM. They may not sync with South Florida. Sure, they've succeeded where they're at, but how many successful mid-major coaches have failed once they hit the big time. There is at least a greater chance this could happen with these two.

Again, this is the sentiment of other college football fans I have spoken to in a general sense. I understand their opinions mean nothing and affect UM's search in no way whatsoever. I just find it interesting to observe how fans of OTHER teams (and mainly, UM's rivals) feel about who Miami hires.

I know, cool post.

What have you heard?

How I have these friends, I don't know...but I have a lot of FSwho friends both in Cali and Florida....and OP, I can unequivocally confirm that they DO NOT WANT Butch Davis here. They love me, so they take it easy on me, but they absolutely LOVED Golden being here. They want us to go after another mid-major coach b/c of the 50/50 shot they may or may not be good. One friend stated, "if ya'll get Butch, Jimbo is going to have a hard time in ya'll back yard."

Don't think for one second that the U part 2 did not do anything but boost Butch's street cred. Most of these kids were only 3 or 4 years old when the 2000,2001 teams were assembled....but their parents weren't. The days of a 4 or 5 star kid saying "I grew up a Miami fan" but wind up going to Bama or FSU or OSU will be over w/ Butch here....that's a fact.

I'm in NE Florida and no other fans I know care if we hire butch. They just shrug and smirk and mumble about living in the past. Butchs success would hinge on his coordinators.

They do seem to think that strong and schiano would be threats. Say what you will but multiple fsu and uf fans have told me they don't want this.

No one will care about Herman or fuente because they are unknown at this level. It would raise an eyebrow from other fans but not much else.

Bottom line is how we and they feel about the hire 2 years after. Not before the hire is made.

One of the reasons why Miami should hire Butch. It's been a long time since other schools feared Miami. The program needs that to happen again.
Lmao no one fears Butch Davis. No one ever feared him as a coach.

TROLL!!!

Here in NW Florida, right in the middle of Alabama/FSU country, everyone I know is a fan of one or the other, and we talk football - almost civilly, but sometimes not.

The one common thread from both Alabama fans and FSU fans is their extraordinarily negative reaction to Butch Davis coming back to UM.

They know. And it's something they don't want to see.

Once Butch comes, CFB discussions of a civil nature will cease.

...and I'm good with that.

Same reason i own guns...because others say that we should not have them.

BBB!!!!!!

I know there's a lot of coaches out there who care.
None of them want to lose the south Florida recruits.
