Source: Idaho to drop to FCS – Official announcement tomorrow – FootballScoop
Tomorrow, University of Idaho President Chuck Staben will make an announcement regarding the future of Vandal football.

On March 1st, the Sunbelt announced that following the 2017 season, the conference would not be renewing Idaho’s football only membership (New Mexico State was voted out as well). Given the lack of a future conference affiliation, speculation grew that Idaho would seek to find a more local schedule, likely by dropping down to FCS play.

FCS sources tell FootballScoop this is the route Idaho intends to move and the official conference affiliation will be announced tomorrow.

For all sports other than football, Idaho currently competes in the Big Sky vs teams such as Idaho State, Eastern Washington, Montana, Montana State, North Dakota, etc… We’ll just leave that there.

When's the last time these guys even were competitive in their conference??

Makes sense, more teams should consider. Rumor is Eastern Michigan will be dropping down too. FIU and FAU would probably be best off doing the same and competing with the FAMUs and BCCs of the world.

If the rumor is true I would love for North Dakota State and Eastern Washington get a shot in the FBS.

When the WAC collapsed they were left without a conference. they got into the sun belt and the last second. so now the sun belt is expelling them too.

Eastern Michigan is reportedly considering the drop as well. NDSU may be a good candidate to replace them in the MAC. Too many schools in the Div1a level, IMO.

Agree on FIU.
They have absolutely zero support in a region where you have the worst sports fan base in
the country.
FAU may have a shot at being a decent Div1a participant.

You've got to move the University of Montana up, too, then. They've got the finest facilities in 1-AA (FCS) and a great tradition to boot, not to mention a pretty solid university, academically. Of course, you'd have to likely move Montana State up as well, given the politics in this state.

Idaho moving down makes complete sense...they never were competitive in anything they did outside of that Potato Bowl win a few years back. They play in a shed that would make a few farmers envious, though, I guess. Now they're back in the Big Sky playing all of their "traditional" rivals, outside of Boise State.

When Dennis Erickson was the coach?

I think Dennis coached there one year before he was offered the job at Arizona State and jumped at it. I remember he coached at Montana State before he went to Wazzu and then Miami.

Idaho was his first head coaching job.

He was the head coach at Billings Central Catholic High before that, too.

Yea but who would drop in favor?? I mean other than New Mexico State...

San Jose State is one off the top of my head...you really wouldn't need anyone to drop down, though.
