OT: Trevor Lawrence named starting QB for Clemson

Are you kidding me....Bryant says he wasn't given a fair chance, even though he started their first four games of the season. Dabo gave him every opportunity to succeed as the starter. Clemson is shooting for the playoffs and not just a divisional title. He sees what happened at Alabama and knows that he needs a QB like Lawrence to have any shot at beating them in the playoffs.

Dabo came out and stated Lawrence was his starter for the next week and made it known to the entire football community. That is the definition of not playing games and handling it correctly.

What do you expect Dabo to do? Not start the better QB so that he doesn't upset Bryant and possibly his buddies on the team?

We can talk about the better player but the guy that Dabo leaned on to close out the Texas A&M game was Bryant. He didn't toss Lawrence into that environment when the Aggies were making their push late. So if you're Bryant you're thinking, "in the only game that we were challenged this year you depended on me, but now that you believe the kid is ready, I'm out? See ya."

Yeah, I really don't get it from some of the posters on this board. We're essentially going through the exact same thing as Clemson is (more talented underclassmen vs senior QB). Many on here, including myself, are clamoring for Perry to start over Rosier as the former's more talented. Dabo made the right choice here. For Bryant though, he needs to stop complaining about doing everything right. CFB is a results driven business, and Lawrence is getting better results and has higher upside than his predecessor.

I agree with everything your saying. It was inevitable that Lawrence was going to replace him as he has the more live arm for sure. Just to play devils advocate do you think they beat A&M with Lawrence playing the whole game and Bryant not there? We will never know I just thought Bryant provided a much needed boost to the offense with his legs for that one. But the move is the correct one at the end of the day.

Feel bad for Bryant. Dude wasn't struggling that bad to get bench. He was completing 66% of his passes, but Lawrence is a legit talent though, so I see the reasoning, but the optics is kind of dirty with this move. And he's a Sr. too. They didn't even give him a chance to transfer out and start for another team. Dam that's effed up, but you roll the dice, and hope for the best.
That's disloyal imo, I hope top recruits see that.

I think at the end of the day Dabo believes that Lawrence gives them the best opportunity to beat teams they will face in the playoffs. They aren't going to face teams that possess the type of defense AM rolls out there. It happens all the time in football where the younger guys, especially at QB, plays sparingly until a certain point of the season when you think they are at the level of the starter. Dabo apparently believes Bryant has reached his ceiling. Lawrence is currently at that level of play and will be able to surpass that mark in short order.

It's not a knock against Bryant, just like it isn't against Hurts.

Yes, but not really.

Miami was going to win the FIU game whether Perry played or not. Malik hasn’t lost ... in a way he’s “successful”. But who in the fan base defines Malik’s job at QB as successful?

Winbush can add his name to that list too.

I was referring to Clemson defining success as winning championships. What do you mean Malik hasn't lost?

To beat alabama, you need a lawrence type talent at QB and dabo knows it. the issue for clemson is that lawrence struggled in their only tough game so far (albeit it was his second game ever) and they have zero depth. they've lost like 4-5 QBs so they have to hope no one roughs up lawrence.

That’s not true. Malik is 3-1 in games he’s started this year and the fan base would riot at the prospect of Malik starting tomorrow.

Fair Point. I was thinking of it more on the lines of people liking Kelly Bryant and respecting him (teammates and recruits). I get the sense that Malik isn't the most popular among teammates regardless of record.

Go back to last years season ending losing streak. Fans load up the majority of their disgust and throw it squarely on the shoulders of Malik as to why Miami didn't win. Go back and look at some of the closer wins as well and you can find some of the same disgust thrown onto Malik.

If those two are equal at this point in Richt's eyes, then you go with the younger kid at this point. His ceiling is higher and he gives you a better option in the passing game. The mistakes he will make will be no different than the ones the older option gives you.

fans wanted hurts out all season last year and it took a pathetic half against UGA to make that change.

great message from NCAA with new rule promoting individualism over teamwork. save me the "he's gotta do what's best for him and can showcase his talents elsewhere". dude isn't an NFL QB at Clemson or his new school

I have no problem with the new rules for players, coaches do it all the time. Good for the goose, good for the gander.

One of these times this new strategy of benching the more experienced winning QB in favor of the freshman hotshot is gonna backfire. And Clemson is now in the "perfect storm" type of situation for it to happen.

When one of the young hotshot dudes gets injured and there is no one to turn to it will get interesting. It's only a matter of time.

So should these coaches start the QB who they think doesn't give them the better chance at winning the championship? Good coaches don't make decisions based off of scenarios that don't exist for them. Just like everybody knew Tua would beat out Hurts this fall, the same rings true for Lawrence and Bryant. Barring a major malfunction for Lawrence in fall camp or the first few weeks of a the season, people knew it was a matter of time before the QB change occurred.

I know its not the same exactly, but did you really expect Mayfield to sit on the Cleveland bench all year? He obviously give them the best opportunity to win. So in that essence, it's really the same thing I guess. Winning games.
