OT: Time for Gofundme page

A certain party basically stopped educational grants in alliance with Financial Institutions so that the banks profit from American kids getting higher degrees.

1. Make you pre pay into their finance options
2. Take out loans that Dept of Ed enforce for private institutions
3. Saddle millions of young adults with a 50k + debt before they ever begin a meaningful career
- All facts I'm sure many young adults and parents here can testify to.

Sadly those countries that offer free or debt free education have surpassed us in education statistics. When I went to college the Pell Grant took care of all expenses except housing and meals. It was like being on scholarship minus free room and board. It was an investment into education of its citizens that benefited workforce, companies, technology, innovations and increased earnings for investments and entrepreneurial ventures.

Sorry to burst your political bubble:

"He quotes a college lobbyist quoting a study saying: "the regression models found no associations between most of the aid packaging variables (federal grants, state grants, and loans) and changes in tuition in either the public or private not-for-profit sectors."

So when is Bernie going to make the Ivy League tuition free? You know, give an opportunity for the unwashed masses to join Yale's Skull and Bones (John Kerry) and Scroll and Key (Fareed Zakaria) and rub elbows with the Kennedy's at Harvard? Keep asking for your crumbs from the political elites.

What does she want to study? I would find out and pick a school based on that and make sure she isn't saddled with debt fresh out of college. Those are tough decisions to make at that age and a massive problem for many in our higher education system.

Don't confuse debt and cost with value. Do you see the elites sending their kids to directional state U with 35,000 of their closest friends? No. Sure, there are students who can thrive in 400 seat lectures and then recitation sections with TAs whose English language skills are borderline, but college is hard enough without putting up more obstacles in your child's way. Is Miami the best school in the nation? Hardly, but it is a great mix of smaller size and more personnel attention at the undergrad level, while having the name recognition you won't find at some Liberal Arts College.

Trust me, getting great grades at Miami helps when you son or daughter apply to top terminal education programs in a great number of fields.

I know that, but it all comes back to what she wants to do. Should it be a program Miami excels in, then the cost is worth it. If it isn't, in particular if it isn't a high paying field, the cost at three to times the cost at a state university isn't justifiable. Knowing her plan, that would help, otherwise we're just talking without any knowledge that would help make the decision.

Edit: Depending on your definition of elite, there are a lot of high income families with kids at the state schools. Plenty of higher level degrees as well.

She is in Ohio. The best schools in the state are private Case Western U and Liberal Arts Colleges Oberlin, Kenyon, Denison and Wooster. None are near Cincy...The closest ranked state schools are the other Miami and UCincinatti. Sounds like she wants to go where it is warm.

She is studying History her goal is be in law profession. So less debt for undergrad is the focus. Yes florida is her desire. She has full ride tuition at usf and uofTampa. I would say USF is going to be the selection. But is nice to dream. More reality is law school expense at the U would be worth the investment.

What's she gonna study?

Look at the finances but make sure if you have to break the bank it's worth it; better to rack up debt for grad school at the []_[] than undergrad.

Nothing worse than going into debt for a career that isn't in demand or doesn't pay well. Just a dose of reality.

That said, I echo the sentiments of the thread. There's a scholarship for everyone and you shouldn't get turned of by the sticker price.
