I f*cking knew it. This guy has been getting praised for years on being some kind of offensive playcalling god . this was only a matter of time

Seems like he's on the hot seat, lsu win bought him some time most likely

Let's see if richt can continue with his old fsu early Georgia days and start getting some respect again

I suspect chizik won't be around at unc much longer either. Anything coming out of auburn is straight trash

Acc certainly looks like it's got the coaching advantage now. Will be interesting to see where miles ends up

Malzahn turns over Auburn's offensive play calling duties

Gus Malzahn has made one of the tougher calls of his career after Auburn's 1-2 start.

The coach whose offense propelled the Tigers into two national championship games turned the play calling reins over to offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee starting with last Saturday night's win over LSU.

It's something Malzahn had been contemplating and gradually moving toward since Auburn managed just 262 yards in the opener against No. 5 Clemson. He pulled the trigger after a similarly low-scoring performance against Texas A&M.

"It finally got to a point that this is what's best for our team," Malzahn said Tuesday. "This day and time and in this league, I just don't think it's realistic. That's what hit me and that's how we got to this point.

"I feel very good about moving forward with where we're at. We've got the potential to grow a lot on offense. These guys have been with me a long time and I've got confidence in them."

It's too early to tell how much difference the move will make. An offense led by Lashlee, with help from offensive line coach Herb Hand, produced 388 yards and six field goals in an 18-13 win over LSU .

The combination didn't help Auburn's struggles in finding the end zone. The Tigers have only produced three touchdowns in three games against teams from Power 5 conferences. Quarterback Sean White's three touchdown passes all came against Arkansas State.

This week Auburn hosts Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday.

Auburn's offense the past two seasons little resembled the fast-moving unit that Cam Newton led to a national title in 2010 when Malzahn was offensive coordinator. It also hasn't been nearly as productive as Malzahn's first Auburn offense as head coach in 2013, when the Tigers led the nation in rushing and became only the second Southeastern Conference team to top 7,000 total yards.

Resolving the persistent red zone issues is the top offensive priority, Malzahn said. In the meantime, he can perhaps spend a few less hours hunkering down watching film and devote more time to the overall program.

"The biggest difference is I'm not going to be in that film room for 20 hours a day," Malzahn said. "I'm going to let them do it. I'll still be on top of things and involved but it's going to allow me there for my players more — I think that's the biggest thing — and the other coaches more. It was very refreshing last week from my standpoint as far as a preparation standpoint overall. Just being more of a head coach, game manager and everything that goes with it."

Malzahn said he was more relaxed during the week and game as a result, and that he had been "coaching angry."

"You saw the looks on my face, didn't you?" he said, when asked what that means. He said a better description might be that he was too negative and living and dying on every play.

Safety Johnathan Ford said players could tell the difference in Malzahn's demeanor last week.

"He was more calm, more relaxed," Ford said. "He just let us have more fun, came in energized throughout the whole week. Told some jokes, played music. He just had us all relaxed and let us go play ball."

...Will be interesting to see where miles ends up...

Rumor...RUMOR...coming out of Carolinas is NC State BOT trying to figure a way...

Wouldn't that make the ACC interesting?

Problem with Miles is he needs a win now situation considering his age and the contrary movement towards more youthful HCs.

I would say it has more to do with Malzahn not having the Athletic qb he needs for his system than it is the playcalling.

I can imagine if he had Deshaun Watson he wouldn't be giving up any playcalling.

I have not heard any rumors, yet, but I did mention on here a few days ago that this would make a lot of sense for NCST, which is stuck in the football doldrums. We'll get to see just how good of a coach Miles is because he will not have the recruiting advantage at NCST that he had at LSU. NCST has to compete with UNC, Duke, Wake, and even ECU for players. LSU was THE Flagship school in a football crazy state that has a ton of football talent. In any case, if NCST does go after and land Miles it would undoubtedly be an upgrade over what they have now.

Not sure why he's bringing in pro style guys like Sean White to run his offense. It's blatantly obvious when they have a superior dual threat QB, his offense is nearly unstoppable but with a guy who can't run like White, the offense is pathetic.

He is an amazing play caller the problem is he hasn't brought in a QB to fit his O and he doesn't know how to call any of kind of offense.

You do know his OC played for him in HS and has been running and calling Gus offense his entire life. The offense isn't changing the plays aren't changing it just puts the offense in the hands of Lashlee full time so Gus can focus on being a HC.

Not sure if "amazing" is a good choice of words. He literally runs like 10 variations of the same play. Jet sweep, QB read option, with an occasional RPO built in. Its very high school-ish and only works when you have a high skilled dual threat qb.

I get what youre saying; but the guy didn't say he was a great offensive coordinator with an intricate scheme.

He said he was an amazing playcaller; and i believe that to be true.

it really doesn't matter if its the same play ran in many different ways. What matters is his ability to get the defense "off keel" and recognize weaknesses in a real-time gameday setting.

Of course, he needs a strong arm-dual threat guy to make it look good, but it doesn't take away from MALZAHN'S gameday ability.

Miles would bring credibility to NC St. They would worship him and he could build it. Dude won titles so he could look at that as his last job and in a few years have a bad team with lots of red shirt players

PLEASE let him come to NC State. They'll score like 5 points a game under his watch.

Miles proven he played out. Gadgets offenses have a short shelf life and Malzahn a good example. Gotta be some Bros out there that qualify for a sit down at least.
