FSU games have not conflicted with Miami's in terms of schedule, so I've been able to watch FSU, particularly Derwin more in depth. The fact that he's on the semi-finalist for the Thorpe award shows that it's merely a popularity award at this juncture.

Most national player awards are popularity contests including the Heisman. Some of them are won strictly because of preseason hype and the media refusing to admit they were wrong during the season

No doubt, this is exactly what they are now. This started during the BCS era.
