Once Elite, Always Elite?

This is a question for you "pure" football guys. People are always talking about elite football programs. What makes a team "elite"? Once a team becomes truly elite (multiple championships, Heismans, tradition, classic games, epic rivalries, NFL players, etc.), can they lose that status? Can they stop being a "destination" school?

I take a look at the college football standings and these are the elite teams I see:

Miami
Florida State
Oklahoma
Texas
Ohio State
Michigan
Penn State (maybe forfeited)
Nebraska
Notre Dame
USC
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee (borderline)
Alabama
LSU
Auburn (borderline)

There may be teams like Oregon, Stanford or Michigan State that want to join the group but until they can get a few titles and other "credentials", they would only be "this year's elite".

Miami or other teams like Florida and Michigan may have fallen from national titles for a bit, but they still seem to have that "elite" status. Or can you lose your elite status? Would be interesting to hear what you guys think.

In my honest opinion, I think a lot of elite teams have lost it due to the SEC monopoly and ESPN. Not so much SEC recruiting etc. it's because SEC don't play OOC schedules much and just beat up on each other. It gets ridiculous sometimes on how they rank them by beating each other up. I don't care if you tell me they already play hard teams in their own division why should they go outside of the division.

Interesting thread. To me "elite" schools are those that, no matter their record year-to-year, if you ask 100 casual CFB fans to rattle off a bunch of "elite" schools, they're in that list every time. (Scientific, no?)

So for me, that's:

Bammer
Meatchicken
Ohio Taint
Notre Lame
UiF
F$U
Tejas
USC-West
Oklahoma
Pedo State
Miami

Then you've got the "regional elite" - Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Oregon, Nebraska, Mich. St, maybe A&M...

the only 2 things that puts Miami with those teams is 5 national titles and being located in the most fertile recruiting ground in the country

we dont have the alumni base, or revenue, or gameday experience, or facilities, etc..pretty much all the resources which those schools give their atheltic departments in order to make them successful

And by virtue of being located in the best talent pool in the country, it makes all the other factors meaningless as applied to Miami. All Miami needs is a good coach to harness the talent and Miami will win titles.

unfortunately it's not just that simple nowadays bc of the $EC E$PN Monopoly thats going on..we gotta spend the $ to get the staff to capitalize on our talent and keep that talent in Miami, something that Miami's never been fond of doing

Mississippi State and Ole Miss punch holes in your theory. But I truly think these elite teams can't die, their media presence won't let them. I mean why does Miami deserve a U part 2? Because Miami sells. Michigan hasn't done really anything newsworthy on the field lately. But why are they always on ESPN? Michigan sells. These traditional powers will have a major presence in CFB but that doesn't mean they will ever achieve that status again.

Good point. Somebody brought up those teams too. They were elite back before all the media and social outlets we have now. They aren't eactly teams that sell well in this day and age.

Money is King. And whoever makes the most will be the "Elites"

So where does that leave Miami?

If money were king, Texas would never lose. Michigan wouldn't be in the place it is currently. I can go on and on with examples.

At the end of the day, football still comes down to coaches and players. Miami sits in the epicenter of high school football talent and that will never change barring some sort of catastrophic event. All Miami needs is a competent coach and you don't have to pay $4 million to get a competent coach either.

Oh, and the fact that we turned the college football world upside down, completely changed the way the game is played, dominated for like two decades straight, and put the most talent into the NFL since the turn of the century, but yeah, that's all...

I know money doesn't guarantee victory. But the question is, does Miami, Michigan, Texas, etc. Stay National powers even of their play suffers. And yes it will because their brand sells. That's what I mean by money is King
