The whole Shapiro saga really messed things up. It forced UM to sanitize the program to a level that resulted in the firewalling of former players and fans.
I don’t blame Blake for that initial reaction. It made sense but after sometime it was never relaxed or reset in any way.
Community luncheons were cancelled. Events like celebrity waiter were cancelled. Other events were never resumed. This led to a college team being marketed and handled like a pro team which does not make sense and ignored a lot of community members and fans.
Emerging generations of fans were not catered to and failed to have the level of love and commitment to the program beyond “win win win win”. And to be honest, college athletics go beyond winning only. But Miami is a different animal. Always has been.
Having Manny did not help because he was a terrible disciplinarian and administrator.
This feedback has been shared with Rudy and other leadership members by me and other folks far more important than a guy that loves PBJs.
Hopefully Mario changes things. I think he absolutely will.
