Honestly, with Shalala moving on, the odds are SLIGHTLY better. But realistically, I still say he's a MAJOR longshot. Butch has way too much baggage. For a school that suffered the black eye UM did over the Shapiro mess, and is STILL on probation. I just don't see how Butch is hirable by UM.
Even if he had NOT left badly, which soured a lot of people at UM and burned some bridges. The negative buzz around him, the NCAA scandal at UNC, which despite the fact they didn't pin it on him, certainly has a public perception that he knew about it and turned a blind eye. He's even been publically accused by former players of having known about it. Then there was the John Blake fiasco, which while it wasn't necessarily his fault, it was on his watch. More baggage that is going to scare UM away.
I just don't see it. I think it would probably be the BEST thing UM could do for the football program, but I don't see the school putting football first, and bringing Butch back.
There is also the legitimate issue of his age. He's 63. How many years does he really have left? Does he still have the hunger? The drive? When he was here the first time he was a hungry younger HC looking to make a name for himself. Would he still have that? Or would this be like Spurrier at So Carolina? Just a gig to ride out his last few years, collect a paycheck and ride off into the sunset.
I think Butch is a MAJOR longshot.
