North Carolina Legislature Passes Bill on In state Football games

From an article posted by WRAL news:

North Carolina lawmakers want to require the state's two biggest and richest athletic programs – UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State – to regularly play football and basketball games against other in-state public schools.
Under a bill filed by prominent Republican House members, UNC and NC State would be required to play at least one of East Carolina, Appalachian State and Charlotte every year and would have to play each school home and away every six years.

UNC and NC State would also be required to play each other home or away every year, a nod to looming realignment that could move the longtime rivals into separate conferences.

"Sports tourism is vital to the economy of North Carolina, and intrastate collegiate athletics generates millions of dollars in economic impact to the State," the bill states. "It is the priority of the General Assembly to encourage intrastate collegiate athletic rivalries in order to promote economic development."

This protects NC State as they are trying to avoid the Oregon St/Wash St. outcome.
Yep… Lawmakers won’t care what conferences schools belong to they’ll see the match ups they desire. I fully expect other states to follow.

Nothing new here… happened to those competition ducking vaginas in Gainesville

How does UNC vs Appalachian State help with "sports tourism?"

Tourism implies that people are traveling in to see those games.

Are people going to travel to North Carolina from afar to see NC State vs Charlotte? Doesn't affect us at all, except to laugh at them. Dumbass politicians.

Glad we don't have to deal with that. The only dumb local politicians we have to worry about are the ones that tore down the Orange Bowl and those clowns in Coral Gables who won't let us build anything.

But I guess at least they don't force us to play FIU every year.

Even if they do pass a law here it wouldn’t apply to UM as a private school just like the NC doesn’t apply to Duke or Wake.

Maybe the ACC paid some lawmakers off under the table

This has been in the works since the BOG tried to get the legislature to make a law saying UNC and State had to be in the same conference or “equal” conference. They think this will help appease those who want State to be guaranteed a landing spot, even though they don’t have an offer. The consensus is that UNC is gone. But they won’t make that move until FSU and Clemson get through their litigation.
