And you have to think there are a lot of reasons why a company like Nike would be willing to pay for basketball recruits as opposed to football:
1. Less busts - it's easier to identify high school kids that will be stars in the NBA than it is to find ones that will be stars in the NFL
2. Shortened Return on Investment - most star basketball players will go to the NBA one year out of high school as opposed to 3-4 for football.
3. More team impact - there are less players on a basketball team and the stars are involved in more plays (even with a QB they are only playing ~half the snaps) and it's a lot easier for a good basketball player to standout even if the team they are on stinks
4. Recognition - this overlaps with the previous point, you see the stars more and you recognize them more b/c they aren't wearing helmets
5. The equipment they use - football, baseball, etc are wearing specialized equipment; sure there are people that might buy Nike cleats b/c some celebrity endorsed them, but that is a much smaller demographic and something that people do not purchase as frequently as general sneakers.
I am sure I am missing some, but my point is that they get a much higher return on investment between timeline, star power and less busts. They will let the fan boosters pay the football kids and then hope to sign the ones that make it to the NFL as stars.
