Gentlemen, I need some advice. I’ve lived up in Georgia for 10+ years now, so I’m no longer a South Florida local (feels so weird to say!). Going to be coming home next week and taking my son on his first trip to Fort Lauderdale / Miami before doing a Disney Marvel cruise, and we are going to hit up campus too. I haven’t been there in probably 15 years - are visitors allowed in the Hecht? What else is new on campus that we should check out?

What are the good local spots for food these days? We’re also going to the Heat game next Wednesday night, so I need something in that area.

Much appreciated!

THANK YOU! This is what I was looking for but I’m a stroke survivor and my brain fails me sometimes.
No worries. I'm not a stroke survivor and my brain fails me.

@TheOriginalCane can chime in, but there's also the bookstore on campus, the team store on the other side of US1, AllCanes on Ponce, and Caneswear down in Davie for gear.

Yes, I do remember all those places, thank you! We’ll be staying up in FTL so I already planned on going over to Caneswear since I’ve never been there before. Do they have Heat gear too? Gotta get my kid a shirt before the game.

Any food recs? My kid is 7 but can handle grown-up places too.

Following up on @JD08 's points, the UM Sports Hall of Fame is good. Hecht is...open...I'm not sure if it's "open to the public, in full. Last time I went, I just wandered around like I knew what I was doing and got into a lot of areas. Maybe call ahead and see if they do limited tours of certain areas.

You probably know where AllCanes and the UM Bookstore are. They are now under common ownership. Harry has moved over to the Hurricanes Team Store, which is a bit tricky to find the first time. I have been parking at one of the meters on Caballero, then you walk back towards US 1 and walk along the sidewalk (north) until you get to the store.

Also, CanesWear in Davie will definitely have Heat merch. Check out the website in advance if you want to see what they are likely to have, and then they have RACKS of older merch out on the sidewalk too.

As for restaurants, I tend to love the old classics like The Big Cheese. Mamey Miami is a new spot in the same hotel building along with Hurricanes Team Store. I was supposed to go there for one of the Zoom lunches, but I ended up not being able to travel from Atlanta and missed it.

I know that a lot of people swear by Havana Harry's on LeJeune just north of campus, I've always like that spot going back to when it was an Italian restaurant (first time I ever had roasted garlic with my bread service).

For the Heat game, consider some spots up around Wynwood/Little River, north of the arena. I'm a big fan of this spot called Blue Collar on Biscayne Boulevard.

I'll let some of the other SoFla locals make some restaurant recommendations too. I know what I like, but I'm not always up on the latest and newest hot spots.

Thanks so much. UM Sports Hall of Fame is what I had been thinking of-I knew there was a place where we could go see the trophies and stuff but I couldn’t remember if it was in Hecht or another building.

Had no idea Harry moved over! I’m feeling old now. Is Circle K even still there? 🤣

Appreciate the restaurant recs!
